It's true, of course, that if (and it usually does) the text runs off the bottom of the page in the scrivenings view, you can't see it. But Scrivener allows you to open other notes in "quick reference...
It sounds a little like you are describing the "scrivenings" view in Scrivener, where the editor will show the contents of selected items as if they were one, longer item. There was an two-pane outlin...

My three-year old review (has it been that long?!) on Mac Appstorm will give you some idea bout the fancier features of Scrivener:

askSam vs. Zoot? and vs. others
10/9/2013
One thing that I would like to emphasize about Zoot, something I think gets lost in all the talk about how inscrutable the application is: You can start using Zoot without knowing a whole lot about al...
ConnectedText v6 is out
10/1/2013
I love ConnectedText, but have not been using it much, as my workflow at the office just doesn't fit it in, and I use a MacBook for personal work. I keep trying to resurrect my use of CT, because I am...

Horizontal outlining
9/13/2013
A horizontal outline is essentially a tree diagram, I think. At times it is useful to see your information that way. I personally would not find it an advantage to ONLY be able to view my information ...
askSam dead?
9/11/2013
As for AskSam, I wouldn't go near it with a ten-foot pole. I am suspicious of a company that keeps using a "server crash" as an excuse for not coming out with a long-promised update. I suspect they ju...
askSam dead?
9/11/2013
Price and features are not always correlated. AskSam Pro costs $395, much more than most of the programs we discuss here, yet it is one of the least-well supported -- and they can't even keep their se...
Back to ConnectedText

AndyJim,
If I understand you correctly, you have longer documents that you want to split into shorter snippets. If that is the case, you can do that very easily with CT. Dump the text into one topic ...
askSam dead?

Right on schedule: This came through the list serve from Wade Goodman:
We have experienced a massive server crash here at askSam and everything we have is currently down. We are currently working wi...
askSam dead?
9/7/2013
The last time this happened was in early July. When people inquired on the list serve, this is the response from Wade Goodman:
We have not closed up shop. We've had a fairly major server crash but a...
askSam dead?
9/6/2013
Are you prompted to ask this because their web site has been down? There was a small amount of chatter on the AskSam list serve about that. However, this has happened before and then Wade Goodman, who...
Does Anyone Use The Brain v7?
9/1/2013
Just to clarify, because you may have the wrong idea, there is no difference between the enterprise edition and the desktop version, at least not that I'm aware. The "enterprise" edition is just the a...

I also need to comment on the cost of $9 per month if you want more than three trees. That's a lot of money each year. If you use it extensively, then it would be worth the money. But I doubt I'd get ...
Does Anyone Use The Brain v7?
8/31/2013
I use The Brain 7 every day at the office. It really works well for me. I have written about its advantages and disadvantages on my blog, here:

Personally, I am very reluctant to commit my work to any cloud-exclusive app. There is too much history of abandonment. Nevertheless, I am impressed by the concept of Ginko, and wish the developers go...

Another option to consider is Zoot. It combines the "spreadsheet" grid view you describe, with a full editor window. Its smart folders can be used to gather information as you need it. Worth a look.
