I tend to print off articles etc. I find useful to PDF, saving them to a folder/set of folders indexed by FoxTrot Pro. I did use Curiota (macOS), the rather nice free app provided by the developer of ...
infoqube update
10/21/2020
Dang, Pierre, that’s impressive. I loved your summary of InfoQube’s features, too – a very helpful way of looking at it.
Keep up the good – and amazingly consistent ̵...
Docxmanager, looks nice
10/21/2020
Good for you, Edwin – what a refreshingly honest, straight-from-the-shoulder update.
I’m impressed!
Best wishes,
Bill
Roam Patrol!
10/19/2020
Meanwhile, back to Roam-ing software:
there’s some passionate enthusiasm for Obsidian over on Effective Remote Work (https://effectiveremotework.com), including a dedicated course and tips on c...
Roam Patrol!

Ditto for FoxTrot Pro, for identical reasons: less app-dependency, more flexibility. Similarly, I’ve moved away from favourites like Ulysses and Scrivener to markdown apps for all my notekeeping...
MacJournal 7
10/7/2020
Yep, I’m running on Catalina, and MacJournal is running on it with no problems at all. I suspect Dan doesn’t always bother to update the background details.
I was trying to think of a com...
MacJournal 7
10/6/2020
Just a quick note to let people know that the ridiculously powerful MacJournal is still being updated, and is still free to download (from Dan Schimpf’s website at https://danschimpf.com). It...
E-mail backup for Mac users
9/21/2020
Yes, I did contemplate doing that, in fact, because DevonThink is so powerful.
It’s still an option, in fact, not least because of its useful web server (although the price for the latter has ...
E-mail backup for Mac users
9/21/2020
I thought I’d update people on our quest for a competent e-mail backup app that isn’t MailStore (MailStore is by far the best option for Windows users!).
We’ve had a very frustratin...
TiddlyResearch
9/6/2020
Thanks, Luhmann. This is a rather good version of TiddlyWiki, once you get used to the fairly significant differences (required tags, in-note editing).
Cheers,
Bill
As I use it in anger, I’ve come across quite a few minor but slightly annoying niggles/bugs. Having said that, the app is brand-new, so kudos to the developer for getting so many things right.

… and of course Dr Andus’s reply totally justifies the CRIMPing approach ;-)
So I’m with you, doc!
Top 5 Roam Alternatives

Do take a look at x3Note, which is on both the Mac App and App Stores. It’s capable of emulating Workflowy and Dynalist, although there are still some rough edges. It also has a good go at being...
Just when you think the whole note-taking/information management thing is dying down/consolidating on just a few large companies, you discover something brand-new that quite restores your faith in the...
Relanote- early days!

Whoa, I always love a good joing… gonna have to check that out!
CintaNotes attachments

Fascinating that it managed to compress PDF files to that extent – that’s really very efficient.
Hm, nice idea, I must say.
The two macOS apps that would fit the bill most nearly are Curio (alas, macOS only) and Numbers (also available as an online app).
Curio is rapidly evolving into something...
Obsidian in public beta
8/6/2020
Ah, that’s a good idea, Paul – I already use iaWriter as a helpful all-in-one solution for various other desktop-only markdown apps. Thanks!
Yes, Obsidian is actually amazing; I had ...
Obsidian in public beta
8/5/2020
Bringing things back to Obsidian again – wow, this is really quite impressive! Not available for iPadOS just yet, alas, but the desktop version is amazing. It’s got pretty much everything ...
Lack of up-to-date outliners
8/3/2020
Oh, sorry, missed the “non-Cloud” criterion.
I’d definitely endorse RightNote – I used it all the time when I was on Windows.
Also interesting is EssentialPIM. It’...
Taskade
8/3/2020
Nice blog post on use of Taskade as a group Zettelkasten solution – I though it was rather good. It’s got wider/more general application too, of course.

SheetPlanner Free Edition
8/1/2020
Sounds like a good idea, Peter. It’s amazing how often a user who’s become fond of the free version of an app will spontaneously decide to upgrade; you definitely want to encourage impulse...
And if you want something friendly on about the same level as X1, you can try Copernic Desktop Search, which is the same vintage as X1 (actually, I think it predates it by a bit). Pleasant, but dtSear...
Lack of up-to-date outliners
8/1/2020
Well, Workflowy is available for Windows. And DynaList is also available for Windows.
I don’t know how good they are, but the Mac versions certainly run okay.
Cheers,
Bill

Hm, actually, that’s really interesting. I’m going to try it your way! I happen to have a ridiculously fast SanDisk USB3 drive I could use for that…
Cheers!
Bill
