Software for web clippings
12/12/2018
It might sound like an extreme solution -- that's because it is -- but I've pretty much given up on Windows software for research organization and have turned to the Mac's DevonThink Pro. One click an...
MacOS complains about Inspiration 9 but it runs, albeit with a powerfully ugly interface. Feature-wise, Inspiration has a better basic feature-set than OO with better text processing and mind-mapping ...
Atlantis Word Processor has been on a roll
11/16/2018
The only thing which keeps Atlantis from being the best word processor available for any platform is the lack of comments. I use it for first drafts but then have to switch for revisions. It's frustra...
Outliner for nonfiction book
10/27/2018
UV Outliner is a one-pane outliner which is free, offers rich text, styles and has multi-column support. It reminds of a modern GrandView for Windows

So Numbers is now an outliner

One of my favorite tools was XL Notes for Excel which allowed unlimited text (or Word) docs to be created in *each* cell of an Excel spreadsheet. Essentially, this turned Excel into a hugely powerful ...

No problems for me with the latest version. Update your graphics driver, maybe?

Here are a bunch of alternatives not on your list https://alternativeto.net/software/devonthink/
If you miss the Gnome 2 UI on Linux, you're gonna love True Launch Bar for Windows. That's because it *perfectly* mimics the best UI ever developed for a personal computer. In addition to simply launc...
Two Pane Outliner Shootout
5/23/2018
Depends on what you want to do but TreePad is the great-grandaddy of the category and it does everything that I've ever wanted it to do; easily and simply, from organizing notes to word processing.
OR you could just give up on crippled technology and go with Windows 10 on an ink-suitable PC.
Sometimes, there's a reason that a product has an 85% market share. One Note will easily do what you wan...
best outliner you use? (2018)
5/7/2018
Inspiration is old and, somewhere along the line, repositioned itself for the education market BUT it's still a very capable general outliner that was (perhaps) the first to combine an outliner with a...
Off Topic: Which keyboard to buy?
4/21/2018
Any backlit mechanical keyboard with blue switches. In my experience, there's not a lot of difference between brands or price points as long as they have these characteristics.
Blue switches are nois...
Treepad updated
4/19/2018
I've been using Treepad forever and, for me, it's still the most useful and elegant two-pane outliner around. Sure, CherryTree is similar and free but I've never regretted buying TP Biz. As far as upd...

Unorthodox/clever software usage?

XL Notes is now abandonware but it still works reliably with Excel 2010 and it turns Excel into an astoundingly good outliner/note taker. What it does is turn each cell of an Excel spreadsheet into a ...
Let's hope that he's more skilled in programming than he is in building a website. I normally at least give such programs a trial but, this time? Uh, no.
For the adventurous, XLNotes (add-in for Excel) is an undiscovered gem. It's abandonware but you can still find it on the net if you look hard enough. The last version was v.8 but what you want is v.2...
It's sure not new but Treepad celebrated it's 22nd birthday this year and it's still going strong. For a single-pane outliner, there really isn't anything better IMHO.
Crashed for me on startup.
From its start, way back when Office 2007 was a thing, this has had some serious issues and I recall losing a bunch of work when it misbehaved. Thought I'd try it again, 10...
Blast from the past: Writer's Blocks

15 year-old software pricing for a circa 15 year-old software program. Uh, no thanks.
'member when all software was priced at $200 or above? Then the 21st century happened. Apparently, TheBrain missed that particular development. If you're Adobe or Microsoft you can get away with their...
At least in this version on my machine(s) and IMHO, Scrivener has nothing to worry about. A tutorial would perhaps help but I couldn't get rid of the start page and enter into a document in the middle...
