Probably it is just me that likes responsive, and light (in RAM and CPU cycles) software.
In such a respect with Windows OS, I noticed in opening RN with its default manual in a hidle situation:
RN v. 3.5 and 4.0x --> 50--60Mb of RAM
RN v. 4.5 and up --> 110--120Mb of RAM
I know that this is the common pattern for almost any software (think at Adobe!). I just don't share the vision, above all when there is no a convincing proportionality between more RAM vs. more features.

This is one reason why I have stayed with TreePad Business for so long. Light on resources, may not be as pretty yet gets the job done.
Currently with a 2GB file open only using 10.5 mb of ram.

Programmer here (maybe of a future possible medicine end all CRIMPing).
I doubt that this memory increase is anyway feelable for computers and it's still much less then electron based apps with their 300MB+ size have. Even on a phone it might be alright at the moment with 2GB the absolute minimum.
For me performance is important and UX and i recently (last week) tried RightNote and have to say, i just don't get myself to use such an outdated GUI anymore. It flickers while resizing and moving from one note to another. And if you have a 4K Monitor, you really don't want to use this old windows XP style icon bars anymore.

I don't mind if a program needs a little bit more RAM as long as it is responsive.
And RightNote is responsive. And it doesn't flicker here.
Maybe, Lothar, it's your hardware?
I like those "older" icons much more than this "modern" rubbish styled ones.
Don't need this smartphone toy feeling at my desktop.

I'm running Right Note on an old desktop machine and a more recent laptop, I have never noticed any flicker.
In response to 4.6 being released I thought it was about time to do a review. So I did.
If anyone is interested its on https://pauljmiller.wordpress.com/

Unless you have an ancient machine - which is not the fault of the developer - that sort of RAM usage is a drop in the bucket of available memory. I haven't used RightNote in a while, but when I did use it, I never had any problems or crashes, and certainly no "flicker". It's solid software.

RN, as many other softwares, has moved some icons towards moder design. For instance (in WinOS):
..RN up to 4.0x --> Icons of the Editor Toolbar were old style (same kind of the main menu)
..RN above 4.0x --> the icons of the above Toolbar are now modern style and almost 50% bigger.
Unfortunately for users (at least in my limited desktop testing), there seems no option so far to make them smaller, and save - among other things - real estate.
Responsiveness is very important, but is is better done (as it was up to v.4.0x) without eating twice the RAM. In 32bit OSes, RAM is limited!

In a 32 bit version of Windows the RAM is limited to 2 Gb whatever the physical memory in the machine. In a 64 bit version of Windows I don't know what the limit is but certainly more than any machine can physically hold at the moment. Even so the difference in memory use is unlikely to cause problems.
The number of 32 bit machines being used is on the decline. The problem with the size of the icons doesn't happen with Windows 10 only earlier versions of Windows. With Windows 10 Microsoft introduced screen scaling which some programs work well with and which others don't work so well with. Right Note, InfoQube, MyInfo and Ultra Recall scale their GUI to fit computers with high DPI screens. ConnectedText doesn't and so the you end up with microscopic icons and titles which are only half displayed.
My experience of Right Note is that it scales all the elements of it's GUI correctly whatever the screen resolution and there is no flicker on a re-draw, it doesn't use excessive amounts of RAM even for large notebases and has not crashed on me yet.
Both my machines are running Windows 10 (64 bit) with 8 Gb RAM. The desktop screen is 1920 x 1200 and is scaled to 150 %, the laptop screen is 3200 x 1800 and is scaled to 250 %.

I thought it was 2, some programs seem to be limited to 2Gb on 32 bit systems, I don't know, looking on the internet there are some who quote 4 Gb as the limit which would make the extre usage of RAM by Right Note on a 32 bit system even more insignificant.

The flickering is extreme on my machine.
It's a good Core i7 with 32GB RAM and a GTX950 graphics card and all the other CRIMPers stuff like Connected Text or Ultra Recall works fine.
But Right Note 4.5.0.0 is just very bad when i resize the main window, You can sell how the icon bars are cleaned and redrawn. And this is for all GUI themes i tried.
And browsing the example notes is the same, the history is flickering like hell and while moving between text notes is fine, when i switch between text, spreadsheet, source code or webviews it doesn't feel good, especially when you use the cursor to fast scroll down the notes overview tree.
Try it and tell me again if i'm wrong, the latest version has become worse quality or you finally agree.

Theory helps practice. But not always practice coincedes with theory.
2^32=around 4GB. That's theory.
Yet with Win OS (in my case at least) the 4GB of physical Ram is seen by the OS only partially: 3031Mb (Everest utility data) in the portable PC and a little more in the desktop (in both cases graphic cards present, with their own Ram).
In the WinOS environment, with few peculiar exceptions, a single application cannot take on its own more than 2GB. That's why some hungry software are made nowadays 64bit only.
Back to outliners, RN is one of the most demanding in memory. Other responsive outliners take much less RAM. It was already pointed out in this thread the case of TreePad, But in my experience this is so also with ConnectedText (15-20Mb), Mybase (idem) and, after RN v.4.5, Ultrarecall (30-40Mb) and Wiznote (50-60Mb).

No problems for me with the latest version. Update your graphics driver, maybe?

I do see the toolbar and history list repaint flickering that Lothar mentions, but it's not something I would call extreme, unless you are doing something extreme like resizing your window back and forth, again and again :-).
All things considered, I much prefer the current "old" UI to Material Design expanses of borderless white boxes, making me guess where one window ends and another starts, where shades of grey "distinguish" items, where input fields are hard to locate, and where interfaces lose their individual character and all look like Google.

... and where all those flat UI design elements have the soul of a Andy Warhol tomato soup can painting.

I have tried to reproduce this on my machines, switching between notes, dragging things around and resizing things and I have seen no appreciable flicker.
I have an old desktop machine which was a state of the art gaming machine once upon a time which has an old nVidia graphics card and a more or less current state of the art laptop with whatever Asus put in their laptops to do graphics.
Perhaps you ought to report this on the Right Note website as a bug in the program.
It can't do any harm and it Mr Bauer may be able to solve the problem.

The parts that flicker for me (only when the whole app window is being resized) are the toolbar icons above the tree (do you have those on?) and the 'Recent/Frequent/History' tab titles in the History panel. If you switch to the Global search panel with F9, the whole search panel repaints/flickers as you resize the app window.
I don't resize the app very often, so this isn't worrisome to me, although I agree it looks less than professional.

Yes now that you mention it the toolbars are drawn slightly later than the rest of the screen when resizing the window but this is such a small delay as to be barely perceptible.

Does anybody on this forum have up to date information on Rael Bauer and his Software 'Rightnote'? Many thanks

I was on there just last week so I'm guessing they just have the site down working on it. I also emailed a question and received a fast response so they're still active.
I'd just try it later, probably just working on the site.
Strange through that it shows "expired" but then gives a future date.

Thanks for your swift reply and positive news, LB. I was a little concerned as I am pleased with Rightnote, and purchased a Lifetime License a few years ago.

It seems there was some problem with my provider renewing our domain. I tried to contact them today, but looks like they are off for the weekend. Hopefully this can be resolved tomorrow. :)

The "future expired" web page is a redirect from myorderbox dot com. I've never heard of myorderbox. No idea if they are a threat or not.
The expiration date is pretty odd. One would think in this day of NTP everywhere that a server responsible for expiring sites would always have the correct time, at least within a month or two.
Or maybe that's Martian time.
