How about using a 3rd party search tool (desktop search) for the attachments? There are a number of them discussed in a long-running thread on DC:

More new features I just came across:
1) support for tags introduced using the #tag format. Personally I haven't felt the need for this one but now that it exists, it opens up some new possibilities....
