org-mode.
Hate Emacs, but org-mode has been too useful, especially tables (spreadsheet) and embedded columnview (convert all same-level item properties into a spreadsheet).

Actually the civ example is pretty representative here; civ5 is slower, fatter, less customizable, less feature-rich and arguably more beside-the-point than some of its predecessors.

normally universal extractor can deal with the exe files,
but not in this case. :(
my guess is that even if it could be extracted it still wouldn't
work as it may need to put stuff in system directo...

Have used it on and off for a while.
Has basic text/rtf note-taking, but is primarily for listing,
which it does very well.
The application is very stable and portable.
Columns are not customizable...
