I see that v. 2.0 was released last week. Has anybody tired it out yet? The previous version struck me as “just there” and seemed OK for a portable PIM that was strong on basic calendar features, albeit it was a bit slow on my USB drives.

ok here’s the result of a recent eval,
listed are most reasons for it failing (given my requirements),
in no particular order:
Tries to dial home.
Strange process attack going on, the app propagates itself indefinitely if blocked.
(the developers blamed this on my firewall, however almost no other app does this)
Redundant UI; floaters are used for data entry, then the same data is displayed in
docked panes. just the panes should be used.
There are no docked panes to show/edit schedule-item details.
No in-situ editing of data in tables/trees.
Data fields (columns) are not customizable.
No data (columns) for notes.
No inter-field calculations of any kind.
Cannot parse/sort incoming/entered data via script.
Rtf editing in notes is very incomplete. if its an off-the shelf rtf
control there are very few options exposed.
No quick re-assigning of file hyperlinks; the browse dialog does not
open at the path specified in the hyperlink. this makes it very
tedious to update a large number of links (and is a common problem
in many apps).
Cannot set the schedule day display range by click-dragging a selection of
days in the mini calendar.
Cannot customize the fields in the contacts section.
No pdf export.
No export templates.
Slow, sticky UI (for what ti does).

For my purposes, EssentialPIM works beautifully. I’ve written a very full review of version 1.92 on my blog—see the SOFTWARE tab on the top for link to the review. I just downloaded 2.0.1 earlier today and will check it out within the week, probably posting an update on my blog.
Also of interest is ACHIEVE PLANNER, an organizer on steriods, also reviewed at my blog, with link to review under the Software tab.

Thanks for the heads-up on your review. I’ll check it out today, if my calendar says so! ;) I downloaded the portable versions of EPIM 2.01, pro and free, to my USB drive, but had a problem with it wanting a firebird login and password. There was a thread on the subject at their forum, but no specific resolution to the problem that I could see. I’ll try to take a look at ACHIEVE PLANNER as well.

I’ve now installed the EssentialPIM PRO 2.0.1 upgrade. There are at least two improvements worth noting.
The interface has been changed so that there is now one sidebar area with buttons to different areas of the program, i.e. Calendar, notes, Tasks, Contacts. The entire rest of the screen isturned over to data, increasing the size of data display. I rather like it, especially the week calendar view.
The tree structure in Notes is now collapsible.
I’ve taken some screenshots and will be posting them on my blog early next week.
There’s also apparently a new database engine under the hood, but I don’t understand these technicalities and cannot comment.
