Beta 02 to be expected by the end of this month.
I haven't tested SQLNotes yet (no time...).

Hmmmm.....I wonder if there's any connection between:
SQLNotes from NeoTech and NeoMem? (http://neomem.org
Maybe it's just a Neo-coincidence? :-)
I still use Neomem:
a) Small footprint
b) Open ended data design (if you're comfortable with relational data design)
c) Open Source (free)
Takes some time to get it set up to be what you want, but that's a fair tradeoff for a system that is so open ended.
Now back to dreaming of a well-paying job as a PIM evaluator...dream on.....

New version of SQLNotes (0.9.13) is now available as a free download at www.sqlnotes.net.
SQLNotes can now work as a 1 pane (outline/grid) OR as a power 2 pane outliner, thanks to the built-in full-featured HTML editor.
Fans of 3 pane outlining (aka Zoot) can also configure SQLNotes to behave as a 3 pane outliner (beating Zoot since it has a HTML (i.e. rich text) editor.

I thought about downloading this - it looks very interesting - but getting the download seems unduly difficult.
First, you have to hunt around for a download link on the home page (why no tab on the menu bar?) Then at the download page you have to register before you can download. And during the registration process you have to provide: user name, first name, last name, display name (why so many name variants?), email and password. This apparently means that you are also registering for forum membership.
I can see why a developer would want to do things this way; it gives him or her a clearer picture of the potential market. But it may give a different message to potential customers, who don't always want to do things on such restricted terms.
As I don't know the web-site, I'm not very happy about doing all this just to get an early beta. But "that's my choice," as they say in Kansas.

Sorry if you found it difficult to download. The web site was updated to make it much easier.
It is however quite common to require some user information to download trial version of software, so SQLNotes is no different. In fact, many software require e-mail confirmation, which is not required for SQLNotes.
I'd encourage you to download a copy and start using it. Being in development, it allows you to influence how it will evolve in future releases. The feature set is already quite impressive, but there is more to come...

Hey PIMfan, thanks for the pointer! If NeoMem supported graphics, It probably would replace my usage of KeyNote... oh so close. :-(

SQL-Notes is one of the few packages I have downloaded and not immediately uninstalled. Though the developer compares the product a great deal with Zoot (its item window is reminiscent of Zoot), it seems to me to compete squarely with UltraRecall (based on a database, with user-defined properties, built-in html browser and so on). I haven't tested it a great deal, but I am keeping an eye on the betas to see how it develops.

You are quite right Graham, that SQLNotes (code name) competes more with UltraRecall than with Zoot. But above all, it is inspired by Ecco since at its basis, it is a one-pane rich text outliner with columns, user-defined fields, etc. The 2nd pane (à la UltraRecall) kind of comes as a bonus, but is not the central feature.
New version has just been released (0.9.20) and includes many new features and improvements, namely:
- Item formatting using a Formatting toolbar
- DateFilter toolbar added. Can be used with all grids, but in particular with Appointments and Todos!
- Image viewer added. Rotates to fit picture size. Can have multiple viewers opened. Will then show pictures in sequence. Can lock a picture in a viewer. SQLNotes is a good tool to organize your digital pictures.
Plus many many more, making it more Ecco-like. Free download.

Hello Outliners,
Just a note to keep you updated on SQLNotes dev. as version 0.9.23 is just out:
- MS project-like Gantt Charts: to help you manage your projects, fully integrated with the outliner
- Use MS Word (or other MHT editor) as your rich text editor. Finally a PIM with a top-quality rich-text editor.
- Live-search: Simply start typing to find any info in your database. Now shows in which sheets those items are displayed.
- Full parent lineage shown in the properties pane (actually a parent Tree as SQLNotes support multiple item parents).
- Visual feedback of which items have rich-text notes.
- Unicode support
Major features next in line for release:
- Synchronization between multiple copies and users
- Fully integrated Calendar, optionally linked to Outlook
ChangeLog here: http://mantis.sqlnotes.net/changelog_page.php
Download here: http://www.sqlnotes.net/Download/tabid/61/Default.aspx
Free while in beta, Introductory price start at just $50 !

Thanks Pierre,
It's nice to see the continued development! The Gantt chart is definitely a welcome addition, making SQLnotes even more reminiscent of Ecco ;-)
