Maybe you are referring to Everdesk? It treats mail messages as ordinary files and provides an interesting interface to manage both messages and OS files
I've just downloaded and installed it. Sounds very interesting (although complex). Will take a closer look this weekend.

I use Everdesk Optima everyday, as my central workspace. Now and then I receive a link to download beta versions. So, although it is not as fast as I desired, it seems that development is alive.

Everdesk to manage mail and related microprojects,
Copernic Desktop Search to have differente views of files and mails,
Zoho Mail to view and answer urgent mails

I'm trying The Bat! now. In my opinion their virtual folders are not as flexible as in Zoot, but it is the closest I've found.
So, until Zoot is in beta, I think I will use it. License price is fair...
