Forum redesign

At long last, I finished the redesign. Please let me know if there are any issues or improvements you would like to see.

The old site actually made it difficult to see new messages that needed to be approved, so I should be able to catch up on that now. If you feel like I have missed your message or have any login/account issues, please use the contact form.

I am looking into having replies to topics you post emailed to you (as an option). Anyone want all messages emailed to them? Or perhaps only topics you select to watch/follow?

Thanks,
Chris

I like this new modern version ! It was really needed.
Andy Brice 4/8/2026 6:41 am
Lots a lot more modern. Thanks!

**Looks** a lot more modern.

Wow. Congratulations, though secretly I miss visiting what felt like a late 1990s forum that was still somehow operational.

Just entered after several days. Bravo Chris! Thanks so much!

Alexander

P.S. I don't need any more emails in my inbox :)

It was a little startling to check in on the site and see something so different, but I like it. Is there any way you can add a "like" button for posts and replies? I'm so used to doing that at other sites, that I find myself reaching for the mouse to click a thumbs-up button before remembering that's not available here.

And just to echo all the people who have said thank you for running this site... it must be nearly 20 years now!

Whoa! I went to sleep in 1890 and woke up in 2030! I've always fondly enjoyed the retro look and feel of Outliner Software, but change is good. Thank you for all your work silently in the background, Chris!!

... one small request if possible. Can you unflag all previous posts (before 4/8) from being marked as New?
bartb 4/9/2026 11:48 am
Looks great!!!!

Excellent !

2 possible improvements:
1- The NEW flag (main page) doesn't seem to be linked to the user having seen the page or not
2- On the main page again, perhaps show the user name of the last comment (and the time of the last comment). This helps detect new comments (see the link below for an example)

Steve, yes it's been almost 20 years - launched the site in May 2006 (I think).

Good suggestions, everyone. I've improved the NEW highlight so it should work reliably now and also added the Last post column so we can see who made the last post on a topic.

Looks really good! Congrats on 20 years of genuinely interesting content.

Can we edit our posts now? :)

Lovely! Thanks so much for this and al your other work

I notice the new site doesn't persist logins like the old version did. Must be a cookie thing. With the old site I could come and go for days and remain logged in even when the browser tab for the site was closed. Now, I need to login every time I access the site. Not a big deal, obviously.

Not something I need.
Chris Murtland 4/10/2026 7:34 pm
It should do that - check the Remember Me option at login and you should be able to stay logged in for 30 days. Let me know if it still doesn't work.

Clean, modern, and has far more information on the opening page. I was surprised, when I first saw it as it was very different.
Ken 4/12/2026 4:33 pm
Thanks, Chris! Was a bit stunned when I first saw the page and I am getting used to the new look, but I am sure I'll get settled in shortly. Greatly appreciate all that you do for all of us. This is a very special corner of the internet for me, and I am not sure it could easily be replaced given all of the information it holds.

Chris, could threads slew down to the last entry read? Like in Discourse. (Just for threads created since the redesign, obviously.)
MadaboutDana 4/14/2026 3:25 pm
Whoa, that's so cool! Thanks, Chris!!!

The ability to edit my posts is the best feature.
