Hi Dan,
Thanks for your post. I found your work-flow description and reasons for choosing EN to be enlightening..

Seems like an ideal candidate for Evernote. Why look any further?

You could try importing your data into RightNote (http://www.bauerapps.com/RightNote.html).
RightNote includes a spreadsheet note type that can import from csv or xls (Importing from csv is ...
You may also want to take a look at RightNote (www.bauerapps.com) - 2 pane outliner based on freeware program KeyNote.
As a writer you may be interested in the predefined styles, predefined paragraph...
