I’ve got many thousands of EccoPro items, each usually consisting of one paragraph of text. Each item also has two column values in addition to the item text. I’ve got so many items that I quickly exceed Ecco Pro’s limits, so I am keeping separate .eco files for each year. This makes it very difficult to search through all the yearly files for text I’m looking for. Also EccoPro (at least not without the cryptic EccoExt extension) does not provide a way to find all items where the item text contains, for example “string1”, “string2”, and “string3”.
It’s easy to put my Ecco Pro items into a CSV file for import into another program, but I haven’t yet found the program that I want for searching these items.
Here’s what I’d like, among other things:
- allows me to do boolean-type searches on the “ItemText” field for items that match multiple conditions, e.g contains “string1”, “string2”, and “string3”
- ideally, allows me to do a quick search like the above simply by typing “string1 string2 string3” - finds all items containing all 3 three of these strings
- seach as you type
- displays found items in a grid - the entire content of the ItemText field should be displayed in an ItemText column
- search terms (like string1, string2, and string3) are highlighted in the grid of found items.
So far, I’ve tried Excel, Ultra Recall, and am trying to figure out how to do this in Infoqube. I’ve noticed that Infoqube seems to choke when asked to display thousands of items, whereas EccoPro didn’t ahve any problems displaying all the items in the file. But that’s not necessarily a deal-breaker for me.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Jim,
You could try importing your data into RightNote (http://www.bauerapps.com/RightNote.html).
RightNote includes a spreadsheet note type that can import from csv or xls (Importing from csv is faster. Importing xls can be slow, but we are working on this. i’d suggest you try importing small amounts at a time…)
Searches are performed using a full text search engine (in fast mode) and I think satisfy most of your requirements.

Keep “All terms” option unchecked.

Tick

>ItemText column

Text snippets are displayed in the search results (by default when search results are less than a set thresh-hold see options dialog, but this can be customized. Otherwise Alt-D shows Details), and search term is highlighted.
I’d be interested to know how it goes. You can contact me directly at our support email address: support AT bauerapps DOT com, if you’d like specific help.

After reading this post I downloaded “RightNote,” and have been toying with it all day. It is very impressive, and gives WhizFolders a run for its money. I was wondering if any members of this Forum have been using “RightNote” for a while. It seems to have a very robust search engine and many unique features. So far I can’t find any problems with it.

UR should be able to do all you require. Plus I find invaluable that it now offers NEAR search.
Say I’m looking for items that talk about default probability, the standard AND search returns hundreds of items. On the other hand, searching for the phrase “default probability” might exclude items that I’d like to include, say “probability of default”, “probability that default happens ...”, and similar phrases which I would be impossible to track down otherwise.

Speaking of Whizfolders, 6.3 beta has just been released. To me the most important improvements over the previous version are the ability to hoist now at any level of the hierarchical outline and the ability to add keywords to topics more directly. Here is a summary of the update: http://whizfolders.com/whizfolders63.aspx
