Not sure if it was mentioned here before, but the online Write! App from HamsterCoders looks quite interesting:
https://writeapp.co/
I don't know of many online writing apps with the "birds-eye view" feature, which can be quite useful for navigating a document.
Here is a review as well:

I believe the term for the "birds-eye view" is "minimap". It is common for text editors and I've found them semi-useful in Sublime Text/Atom when working on long code files. I remembered the
The Bear team thinking about the feature to their note taking app, but wants to explore an automatic TOC first, as a minimap is almost useless on mobile:

I purchase Write a while ago. It's a pretty good editor with several nice features. It's best in Markdown syntax mode -- the Wiki mode doesn't really perform as a wiki. (Clicking wiki-links does not create new notes, as is usually the case with wikis.)
The only downside so far has been the purchase experience -- the site is messy, and ended up somehow charging me twice for the same purchase. An error which the developer has not yet corrected.

Forgot to mention, Write syncs between devices only via a proprietary service run by the developer. So if you need a file on more than one device store it in OneDrive or Dropbox and then open it on the other device.

The site looks like a nice modern design, always a good sign, and the checkout idiot proof, no worries. Nice heads-up from OP.

There doesn't seem to be a way of trying it without buying, so I'm wondering, is this actually a browser-based tool?
They only say "Available on Windows, macOS and Linux", so it's not entirely clear to me whether this would work in Chrome OS, simply as a browser-based app in Chrome, or is there actually an .exe that needs to be installed (in which case it wouldn't work on a Chromebook)?

I've installed it as an executable on my MacBook and my Windows PC. As far as I can tell, there is not a browser-based, cloud app, but I might be missing it.

It seems that there is no trial, but they do offer your money back if dissatisfied. While I think it is not browser based, your writing is saved in the cloud. The site does not make it clear if that could be OneDrive, DropBox, etc, or if it is hosted by them.
I am very uncomfortable with this level of guesswork.

Yep. Their communications skill leave a lot to be desired...

I had no trouble purchasing Write. When you do, they tell you that in a year you will need to pay $5.00 annually for the sync service and maintenance upgrades. But the first year that fee is included in the purchase.
I've installed it on my work Windows PC and on my MacBook and the sync works well. You can also save documents locally, so it shouldn't be an issue to use Dropbox to work on the same documents.
As far as I've been able to tell, there is no way to work on your documents through a browser. You can only choose to share them like this:

Thanks Steve and Franz for confirming. These days I work a lot on my Chromebooks, so a web app would have been my preferred way of using this. Oh, well...

That's interesting. I received a message telling me that I received a lifetime license for sync. They must be doing some A/B testing on their pricing.

... and Write have just contacted me offering a fairly generous discount for a lifetime licence. So I've gone and bought one.
The code to apply is JANVAL (or JANVALUE). In my case, JANVAL was applied automatically and appeared to work (albeit with a fascinating minor discrepancy between the euro amount and the pounds sterling amount).
Cheers!
