Well, CRIMP rules. Last night hell froze over. The moon was blue. Pigs flew. And I bought a year's subscription to IS9.
I haven't had a chance to try the new features. However, Transporter failed on the first few times I tried to schlep some material from Firefox to IS. I will try Transporter later with IE.
Considering the ability to classify data and make references, my initial comparison suggests that I can probably do more, more readily with ADM4.
Let cynics say what they will about ADM4 being in perpetual beta, its combination of keywords and easy to customize metadata columns makes it easy to slice and dice info.
As well ADM's Quick Jumps and save views make it easy and fast to get to any topic.
And so far, ADM's Collector is working, in contrast to Transporter.
I want to explore IS9's calendar capability.
My question to Micro Logic remains as it has been, however: When will the aging interface be redesigned and cleaned up?

Welcome to the IS9 camp, Daly. The transporter works fine for me except a few sites including NY Times. What difficulties do you experience? What do you suggest for the interface though? I think they updated the interface somewhat for IS9 (bringing it XP style minimize/close buttons, etc). I think more specific comments would be helpful here. As far as the interface goes, I don't see IS9 being anything less than ADM4 you seem to like. I for one have commented on improving the ADM4 interface over the years, I would love to hear your perspective on this.

Daly,
While it isn't how its meant to work, in Firefox, if you select AND copy items, the tranporter then sends them to IS.

Ken, as it happens, I was clipping from the NYT site -- it's unfortunate if that chokes up the transporter because I use that site a lot.
Re the GUI: I find that IS becomes very cluttered. For me, the ADM GUI is more contemporary and has a cleaner look. I realize that this is largely about personal taste and preferencess. I know people have an issue with ADM's GUI, and I am not sure whether it is because it is different from what one usually sees in windows or not. I know the first time I saw ADM a few years ago I liked the way it looked.

Graham, I tried the NYT site again, selecting and copying. After about 25 seconds of a red transporter system, IS9 crashed.
I will try transporter on other sites.
Thanks.

Daly,
Assuming the NYT site is the site I think it is. I have just copied this article in IS9 with no problems, I have also copied bits and pieces from other pages.
Which version are you running I have just updated to 9.00.19
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/21/us/21election.html?hp&ex=1148270400&en=cf4b5960d60f0659&ei=5094&partner=homepage
BTW I liked ADM when I tried it, but was put off by the bickering in the Yahoo group, the effort being put into Skype, and the stop-start development.

Graham, I am using .18 which I downloaded last night. I'll download .19. Are there any noticable differences between the two of them?
Re ADM: The delays in coding are a pain. I think that's the risk when small developers take on big challenges.
There was a recent round of bickering around issues related to the delay in coding. All in all I think that it was helpful because it helped to clarify some things in my mind. I share your concern with re to Skype. I maintain that, even with the delays and some of the bugs, no program matches ADM for flexibility when it comes to metadata columns, which I have finally organized in a way that more reflects how I work. Also, by making judicious use of quick jumps and saved custom views I am able to bounce around quite rapidly.
There had also been an earlier round of bickering when Stephen Diamond and Jan Rifkinson disagreed, but that was some months ago.

Daly,
You can ask IS to auto-update under Help. I haven't noticed any differences.
When I looked at ADM, it was before I started to have problems with Zoot, and ADM didn't offer me enough to change and I kind of forgot about it this time around. Having now bought both IS and UR, I am fairly confident I will be staying with oneor the other now.

Graham,
Your suggestion seems to work, but sporadically in my system.
I tried the NYT sites with my IE7 and had no problem. So, it might be an interaction with Firefox and IS9 issue.

It seems that IS is pretty MSIE centric. The odd instruction about "your browser" says nothing about applying only to MSIE, but the instructions only apply to the MSIE menu. So no recognition that other browsers exist

I want to speak a few words of support for the InfoSelect GUI. First of all, I will acknowledge that it has sort of a throw-back look to it, but that's somewhat charming, I think. Too many programs today seem to all look the same, even if they have different power under the hood. But on a more practical level, the selector in IS seems particularly clean to me. Commands execute quickly. With Version 9, the icons have all received a face lift, giving them a bit more dash. In fact, of all the programs I've seen that use a hierarchical tree as the major form of navigation and organization, I think IS's selector is the best. The major improvement I would make if I could would be having the option to view search results flattened, rather than showing the paternity of each note that comes up under the search. And the context tabs are still no substitute for hoisting abilities.

Steve,
Ditto on the ability to flatten search results. That would make my life easier.
As for the interface, I am glad IS9 got some improvements, especially the email icons. But for some reason, I have always like the triangles in the selector. Nobody else uses them, and it sets IS apart from the usual plus and minus signs.
