As I recall, Steve Z. is based in Vermont, and I think at least one more regular contributor to this forum is based in one of the recently inundated areas.

I hope you and your families are all well!

P.S. I can still salvage the topic and make it thematiclly related to the forum:

I have no objection to someone voicing concern for the welfare of another when circumstances warrant. Times have been difficult - more so for some. More compassion needs to be reintroduced in our daily interactions. I think his was very kind of you Alexander.

Agreed. We may be virtual, but we are a community of sorts. No harm in a bit of caring and compassion, especially when natural disasters strike.

I second what has been said. And on the topic of of outliners being used for climate-related problem-solving, the developer of the Sense editor has created a Sense document detailing his proposal for a "Carbon Added Tax":

I was drawn to this forum by the thoughtful and intellectual tone of the conversation. My interest in writer's tools made this place naturally attractive but it wouldn't be the same without the sense of community and fellow travelers.
Indeed, best wishes to all under threat of dangerous weather. I wish I were close enough to help.

Hi, Alexander and all,
Thank you for asking. I really appreciate the concern. I live in the western half of the state of Vermont, which was not as hard hit as the center. The storm dumped most of the rain along the Green Mountains (the spine of the state), so it is the communities there which have taken the brunt of the devastating damage. We did get a lot of rain where I live, but not enough fortunately to cause any wash outs.
When hurricane Irene came through in 2011, it was worse for the state as a whole, but this storm (which has no name, but will probably be called the storm of 2023) was, if anything, worse for those most profoundly affected. They said in 2011 that Irene was a once-in-a-hundred-years storm, but here we are 12 years later with another one. Climate change indeed.
Again, thank you for checking in. This is a great community.

I'm very glad to hear you're okay, @Steve.
For everybody, my recommendation of the month: "The Ministry for the Future", by Kim Stanley Robinson, which, while describing some of the horrendous outcomes of climate change, also offers some very positive ideas for overcoming the issues. An amazing work, based on rock-solid science (most of which you can reference online – I do wish he'd also included a list of sources, however). It's a novel of the near future, incidentally, but interspersed with direct commentary/musings on various aspects of modern society and why they exist. Unusual and fascinating!
