Aperture is slower than Lightroom on the same machine, I definitely agree there. That's one reason I use Lightroom. On the other hand, Aperture is the more versatile of the two.

I wouldn't suggest shelling out for a new machine just because you're CRIMPing... there are plenty of good PIMs available for Windows. On the other hand, if you have to buy a new machine to replace a...

Just a couple of followup points to various posters.... I definitely agree with Hugh about the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners. One of those will change the way you work with physical documents, regardless...

While DevonThink will do what you want, there are other options as well. Adobe Acrobat Pro for instance will OCR PDFs that are not searchable. That's the main reason I use it actually. Acrobat Pro'...

Out of respect for Apple's licensing terms, VMWare will not virtualize MacOS on Windows machines. (Leopard Server however can be virtualized since its license allows for virtualization.) Of course, ...

Scrivener is a really nice app, there's no denying it. DevonThink on the other hand I think is a little overrated. It needs an update... it is actively developed and one is due down the pipe any tim...
Software for organizing photos

I strongly recommend taking a look at Adobe Lightroom. It's a little pricey, but if you're trying to manage a big photo library with both tagging and editing, its workflow is fantastic.

I just convert everything to PDF and then annotate using Acrobat Professional's tools. Acrobat offers a slew of various annotation types as well as graphical tags, it understands PDF+text documents (...
I've never had a flash of insight prompted by "connections" made from off-the-shelf software. On the other hand, I've had some good insights from statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms ...
Wiki tool for Windows and Mac?

Are you looking for a tool that runs on both Windows and Mac, or would a Mac-only tool work for you? If Mac-only is fine, check out VoodooPad. It meets all your requirements (except search in Tiger,...

This is actually an interesting discussion. That Word barely can sort of handle the task by only loading portions of the document at a time is beside the point, really. The reason you're having vari...

Wow! I can't imagine writing a 1100 page book in Word. For documents of that length, I'd encourage you to investigate tools specifically designed for that kind of job, such as LaTeX, FrameMaker, Doc...

Graham, you may wish to experiment with more recent versions of OpenOffice. I've actually found OpenOffice to be more compatible with some older Word documents than Office 2007. I don't use either p...
Best software for emergent order

Brainstorm counts in my mind as an outliner, though it's more of a peephole outliner (or a two pane outliner without the second pane and with heavy use of clones).
Stephen, give Tinderbox on the Mac ...

In my experience, Ecco is best for that kind of thing, for two reasons.
First, it's a competent single pane outliner, which is often a pretty natural way of rearranging data. Its outliner also suppo...

It's too bad that NoteMap is dying, though I can understand why it doesn't sell well... the web page for it is useless, with no obvious way to see screenshots or get a general idea of what the program...
Will, if you have some programming skills, any outliner that supports character styles and some form of flexible export could probably be customized to your needs. I know it's Mac-only, but just as a...
The options for outliners that support footnotes directly are pretty limited, even without the auto-footnoting on paste that you describe (which I suspect you won't find outside of Word).

For what it's worth, there is a class of software like mind mappers but which allow arbitrary non-hierarchical diagrams. This category of software is usually called concept mappers rather than mind ma...

The only good single pane outliner currently available for Windows is NoteMap, but and development on that seems to be stalled (and it's overpriced IMHO). Still, be sure to check it out if you haven'...
