Hi Outliners !
Quite often on this forum, members have asked for a simpler version of InfoQube, centered around *outlining*
(not the more general task of information management)
As I was busy completing InfoQube's feature set, it was always postponed
Now that IQ is closer to completion (with Google Calendar and Tasks working just fine), I got around to doing just that...
It will be named InfoQube Outliner, unless users come up with a better name ;-)
Exit are: Gantt and Timeline charts, 2-D Surface, Map view, Events and Calendars, User code, Pivot table and charts, Home pages, Google Sync, SQL Filters, EMail-merge, ODC links, Dialer, Remote-database sync
What remains are:
1- Outliner with columns
2- Live-Search view
3- Document pane (rich text)
4- Properties pane
5- Item editors
6- Fields and Tags
7- Multiple link types (parent-child, hyperlink, related items, URI)
8- Import / Export
9- Print-preview / Print
File format will be identical to regular IQ, providing an upgrade path for users that want more features
With less features, I'm also hoping it will run fine under Wine (for Linux and macOS users that don't want to use VirtualBox / VMWare)
Totally Free !!
(donations accepted of course :-) )
Beta should be available for download in a week or so

Great to hear Peter! The parts you have excised are the parts that don't interest me and the parts you have kept are the ones that do, so you've nailed it from my point of view. Looking forward to giving it a spin.

Clever decision, Pierre.
Could serve as a low-level entry point to the full-blown InfoQube.

Sounds interesting, Pierre. I would be interested in giving it a spin when it is available. Will it also run as a portable app?

Hi Pierre,
The option actually sounds very interesting, even for a user of 'regular' InfoQube, such as myself, who spends most of his/her time in very simple IQ layouts.
I have two questions:
- Assuming that portable installation will also be possible for the Outliner version, is it reasonable to also assume that the two versions could be used alongside one another on the same computer? (Not concurrently necessarily)
- Why would a separate version of the software itself be needed (aside the freemium marketing model); wouldn't it be possible to achieve the same through a simplified layout template? I expect that maintaining two versions of a programme is more time consuming than maintaining just one plus a series of layout templates.

Yes of course, even concurrently. It is the same engine behind the scene, only the available IUs are different

Having conditional code is sometimes more confusing than separate versions. Plus there is the issue of UI components which would need to be distributed but not actually used.

I am very much looking forward to trying this, especially if it is now finally able to run (using wine) within Linux, to which I have completely converted.

Hi Outliners,
The first version of IQ Outliner is now online !
Some of the dialogs are straight from IQ IM and will be redone in the next version, but otherwise, the simplified IQ is yours and free !

Pierre, this sounds terrific. Can you post a screenshot or two? I'm a Linux user, too, but Wine crufts up my system with stuff. I'd like to take a gander at the UI, though. (I suppose I could do a VM within Linux to try it.)

Thank you so much for making this Pierre, and for putting it out for free.
That said, I have a few criticisms. I realize this is out of favor for almost all software these days, I feel it would be better if on launch, you user were presented with a blank document and could start working right away (it bugs me that even Word needs me to specify that I want a blank document at launch, even if it is only one more mouse click).
My second is that, and I realize this is in an early stage, it could be easier to use. For example, it took me a while to figure out that I needed to create a "New Grid" before I could begin outlining.
But again, it's awesome that you're making this and for free and now that I've somewhat figured it out, it does seem very usable.
Thank you again.

Hi,
Good points ! The philosophy behind IQ (and mostly the same was true with Ecco) is to use a *single* IQBase and put everything in the same file
So... my main (and only file really) was created > 10 years ago, and I long forgotten what it's like to start using IQ.
I'll implement your 2 recommendations in the next release
Thanks !

Hi thank you for making this outliner available. Just trying it out. I can't get the universal clipper to work. Is it supposed to with the outliner (ie not the full information manager)?
Under Tools options it says that hot key is disabled because there are more than one running instance of IQ ... but I only have one running?
Help appreciated.
But thanks for this .... it reminds me of the old days and Ecco Pro that I loved

Hi Pierre,
A couple of quick download questions. On the D/L page, I am assuming that v114 is the latest of the original IQ and that IQ Outliner v115a is the new program. But I am not clear what IQ IM v115a is? Can you clarify and will the releases be just one stream going forward as opposed to separate naming or and numbering?
Thanks,

Hi Ken,
I'll make it clearer.
For the record:
- InfoQube IM (aka IQ) is the real McCoy
- InfoQube Outliner (aka IQO) is the simplified free version
v115a is the current release for both programs

I'm giving InfoQube (Outliner) another try right now, and I am missing one option I liked very much in the older brother: in Grid > Filter & Sort > Sort you could select the Group-By Bar. This whole section of Sorting seems to have vanished. Will it be reserved to paying customers or will resurface ?
Cheers

Hi Judith,
Sorting options will be part of InfoQube Outliner (IQO). Same for the Alpha and Date filter.
Expect these back in the next version, or the next

This sounds great! So I will continue migrating my data to IQO and see what happens.

If I understand correctly, there's no need to migrate data to InfoQube Outliner; both it and InfoQube IM can read and access the same databases. Maybe we can use the same database under both programs.
Is that correct, Pierre?

The same file can even be opened simultaneously by both programs.

Pierre - Were you able to determine if the Outliner version is more successful in running in Wine than the full version?

Sure, can you tell me which distribution you're using ?
I'll set it up in a Virtualbox and try to get it to work
