Noteplan 2.0 is here, on time

Lovely update to NotePlan brings a Global Search function (searches happen across Calendar and Notes) and a very nice nested tags function (very similar to Bear’s).

Both functions significantly improve what was already a very nice app. It is now firmly established as my task management environment.

So far, no spontaneous CRIMPs have displaced it - for months! The fact that you can access NotePlan files (Calendar and Notes files) in iCloud directly through any of your favourite Markdown editors just makes it even more attractive. No lock-in here!

Cheers,
Bill

This seems like a really nice feature that will probably make me change the way I organize everything. I know Bear had infinite nested tags that I tried, but didn't do much with.

I have always been more of an outline person, relying on the outline structure more than a tag structure. But nested tags could change that. I just have to wrap my head around how to change my workflow.

I had conversed with Eduard a while back about possibly adding outlining and folding to Noteplan, similar to TaskPaper. I think it would really make the program stand out and put it well ahead of others like Agenda, but I am not sure he is planning on going that route.

Are most people using "@" or "#" for tags? I had always used @ because of my long use of TaskPaper, but it seems more programs are moving to #?

NotePlan uses @ for mentions and # as hashtags. I think Agenda is the same way. I just want to future proof the notes I make for possible use in other programs.

Now that global search and replace is there this is easy to fix. Just remember to change the first batch to an interim prefix (e.g. + or some other unused character) or else you will wade through notes with only @ or # prefixes....

I use @ for “context” (place, people, etc.) and # for tags, even if the application does not support, or does not make a distinction between @ and #-prefixed metadata. So, even in handwritten notes, I’ll use #make_doc to indicate “this is an action requirement to write a document”. Makes it easier to scan and find what I want.

The standard approach to @ vs. # is very much as described by Paul; @ indicates people, places, while # indicates actions.

I’ve chosen a slightly different approach for tags: I use @ for action indications (e.g. “now”, “waiting”, etc.) and # for references (e.g. “family/dad”, “work/projects”). That’s because I use # to create extensive “folders” of nested tags, which aren’t always helpful for isolating stuff that needs to be done RIGHT NOW. You will tell me that I could use dates for the same effect - and you’d be right, I use those as well. But when I’m running complex projects, the date approach on its own doesn’t always cut the mustard, so using @now (for example) helps me stay on top of stuff that really does need to be done RIGHT NOW WITHOUT FAIL.

Cheers!

NOTEPLAN IS FANTASTIC BUT TOO APPLE-Y FOR ME

I downloaded a trial copy of NotePlan because of the rave reviews on Outliner Software.

It’s beautiful and I want to use it, but will not because it wants to lock me into the Apple ecosystem just as much as Apple’s own software does. (I love and can’t live without MacOs itself because it’s still a bit like unix under the hood). I have an Android phone and need to integrate with it.

I WON’T ACCEPT BEING FORCED TO USE ICLOUD

NotePlan stores its files in iCloud, where I don’t want them: ~/Library/Mobile Documents/iCloud~co~noteplan~NotePlan/Documents/Notes.

Under Preferences>Sync NotePlan offers two choices for storing its data:

* Use Dropbox [Preview]
* Use iCloud

Dropbox is not actually selectable Why? Is this because I’m using a trial copy? I don’t want to buy a copy to find out.

I try my best not to use iCloud and probably won’t buy NotePlan if I cannot use Dropbox.

I WON’T BE FORCED INTO USING APPLE CALENDAR

I don’t use Apple Calendar. Will NotePlan be able to sync with Google Calendar?

This is not a show-stopper for me. I’d be happy to purchase NotePlan as a replacement for DayOne or Journey, but it would be very nice if I could sync with Google Calendar. (Also Apple Calendar and Google Calendar might be able to sync with each other, but I haven’t checked that out.)

@George

There's a distinction in macOS between Apple Calendar (the application) and Apple calendars -- i.e., calendars stored and synced via iCloud.

So, you can use add a Google account to the Accounts in Apple Calendar (via CalDAV -- see Google for instructions). Then the Calendar app will sync with your Google calendars. There is no need to create or use an iCloud calendar in this scenario,. I sync a lot of Google calendars to the Calendar app because Google calendars integrate with more of the universe than iCloud calendars.

Also, the NotePlan Dropbox sync is a preview feature -- if you're having a problem you'd might want to go to NotePlan's reddit to discuss with the owner.

I bought and am using NotePlan, and with its text-based notes I'm considering using it to replace Day One.

I like it a lot, and was initially having some trouble grokking how best to use it. But I was intrigued by the dev Eduard commenting on Reddit about how it could be used as a simplified electronic bullet journal

@Paul,

Thank you for the informative and encouraging post. I'll give the calendar idea a try.

I just noticed that NP has "nested tabs", tabs with slashes in them that act like a hierarchical file system (https://www.noteplan.co/blog/nested-tags-are-here/ I really like this idea.

I joined r/noteplanapp yesterday and see that Dropbox integration is in Beta.

This will keep me going with NP for a little longer!

Thank you Korm and MadAboutDana for the clarification on this and Prion for the great suggestion on how to change it. Time to update my usage a bit.
