Does anyone know what has happened to this program? I have some older files that I need to view (no problem because the program reverted to read only) and edit (cannot). I purchased a license years ago (2014 I think) and remember asking the developer about what would happen if the program or his interest died? Don't remember the answer, but it is virtually non-functional now.
The licensing scheme was very confusing back then. I looked at the website which is still up, and it is just as confusing now. In desperation, I tried both making a purchase and renewing my license. It cannot be done.

Hi Jon,
If you want to share a file, perhaps I can come up with a convert tool

Jon, are you talking about Silva Elm's Sense Editor (www.silvaelm.com) or the editor made by Elastic Co (www.elastic.co/guide/en/sense/current/index.html)?
Jon Polish

The former.

That is very kind of you Pierre. Thank you.
I have to take a closer look at the read only file. It should contain some research which I am not allowed to share. If so, then the answer is unfortunately no.
I am not sure what format Sense used. Perhaps it was proprietary. For you to create a tool would satisfy a market of maybe one. I found Sense useful for a research paper I wrote under a grant, but stopped using it. As a result, I have just one Sense document. Although interesting to use, I found other tools (InfoQube) far more suitable and versatile. Still, it would be nice to be able to poke around in Sense to explore. I might have missed something.

Jon. Can't you install the trial version and open and export your document?
Jon Polish
6/22/2018 2:07 pm
It opens as read only. Few of the menu options are available. I cannot save (of course) nor can I export. I thought I would be able to select and copy the text in the editor, but no.

You know, this is my fault. I had a sense about Sense. We always talk about the value of being able to export our work into common formats. I generally follow that advice, but not this time.

If I were you, I'd install the trial on a second (clean = without former Sense installation) machine and open the document there.

You are right. Thank you for the suggestion. I will do that when I get home. Only issue is that if i remember, you had to install plug-ins to export to rtf, txt or html. Perhaps I can print to a pdf and export the text from there. Or copy/paste from the editor.
Still, having a license and not being able to use the program is a bit much.
Thanks again.

I also owned a license for Sense and, as far as I remember, after activation it should have no problem working perpetually. However, one wouldn't be able to update to versions released more than one year after the original license, unless they updated this.
If you do not find a solution do report back, I can check on my side as well.

Thanks Alexander. I used the trial version on a fresh machine and was bale to get what I needed. The version I originally tried was contemporaneous with the license I had but it remained as an expired evaluation version. Perhaps I exceeded my allotment of licenses. I was concerned about the the possibility of being unable to activate if something happened to the business and expressed this to the developer, Dave Ewins. It's not as if we haven't experienced this before. His response was, "Thank you for highlighting this obvious issue - I will consider possible options." Nothing was communicated after this, but I too did not pursue it.

Jon,
Silva Elm is still present and thanks for raising the issue that the Buy Now / Renew links have been inadvertently broken - I am currently trying to resolve this problem with the Online Payment provider.
Regarding the issues you have raised previously (circa 2015), the next version of Sense will not need Registration / Product Keys - simply the License Key that is provided at the time of purchase.
This does mean that there will be no license expiry with the ability to re-install using the original License Key on a different machine.
I do hope this helps and alleviates your concerns.
I am planning a new release of Sense later this year following a rather extended development. more details will be released in due course.
Regards
Dave Ewins

As of today (2019-06-14) nothing changed on www.silvaelm.com. No sign of any development?

Hi,
Sense Version 1.22 is now available having skipped 1.21. The updated About page partly describes the immensely "frustrating" delay. Apologies to all.

Thanks very much for this update! I originally introduced Sense Editor to this group back in 2010, and I'm delighted that it's still being developed.
I actually do some freelance work on carbon taxation, so it's fascinating to see your paper in Sense format.
I look forward to diving back in.

Good for you, Dave! Love the new features. I enormously enjoyed using Sense until I abandoned Windows for macOS, but I still follow my fave Windows software (you never know – if Apple continues to make poor decisions such as e.g. advertising, truly dreadful Safari UI etc., I might conceivably be enticed back by Microsoft; although their record for poor decisions – including advertising, surveillance, confusing UI choices, tie-in attempts, etc. – is much longer than Apple’s…).
