Why MarkDown might be good?
* Minimal: say no more
* Fast: Just type a few lines & done
If you need them, back up the content as any company might be bought up or merge or stop existing
Medium,com is getting pretty big & is at bottom with a few guides.
These are the free ones that I liked overall:

Ghost has a desktop version, I think, and it’s a markdown based blogging platform.

My favorite right now is http://micro.blog mostly because I found it really annoying to blog from my phone to Jekyll, but the micro.blog app does that very nicely. Micro.blog is billed as a kind of social-media feed, and you can definitely use it that way (it has a number of features, like @ replies and auto-posting to twitter/FB that facilitate this) but it can also be used as a regular blog. Support is very good.
It is also worth mentioning that WordPress has excellent Markdown support via the Jetpack Plugin and you can set the plain text editor as the default. Note, however, that if you post with a third-party tool (rather than directly in WordPress) your Markdown gets converted to HTML before posting.
