An idea:

I have a thought. I have alphabetized the list of PIMs. I can post the list here and people can add any missing PIMs in the proper alphabetical order just by using "reply quoted" and inserting the new items into the quoted list.

Question: Do people prefer two alphabetized lists, one for Commercial and one for Freeware, or a single combined list?

Another thought: People could add a short description of each PIM they have used. The only problem is that the list could get very big and with the the list being repeated every time someone adds to it, this topic could get VERY big.

Perhaps a separate page where the list (or two lists) is (are) added to without the list being continuously repeated as would happen with my "reply quoted" idea?

Great list... several applications on here that even a hardcore CRIMPer like me hasn't heard of before. It also brings back some memories. I recall being excited with Ovation Outliner first came out. A single-pane outliner with a lot of promise. Then the developer didn't do anything with it. I see the web site hasn't been updated in seven years!

Of course, some of the applications listed here are not "outliners." That is, they do not provide any ability to hierarchically organize notes (AZZ Cardfile and Personal Knowbase, for instance).

For the sake of completeness, here are a few applications that I have on my list that I didn't see here:

How about putting this list in an online spreadsheet, with read/write access to all, as in this one where I've imported the original list:

What a great list - days of fun!

I downloaded only one new app from the list yesterday: Scholar's Aid. This is actually a pretty great information manager. It provides:
- rich text notes with tables and embedded images
- tagging and hierarchical folder organization for notes
- associates notes with a bibliographical source, and inserts citations into Word and other word processors
- very decent web capture

I echo the thanks, but it looked like it was Windows-only.

The list is now Win and OSX thanks to many of you.

Bad news though. I had to roll it back to 2008-08-04 11:18:30 AM because the list was incorrectly sorted (i.e. Tinderbox was now a Windows app.)

So changes in the last 2 days are lost. Users can view the history to see the difference. To make this sharing experience:

1- It would be best if users would register, that way, we'd see who modified what, and could be advised if another roll-back is required
2- When sorting, make sure you select all columns and check "Has header row", this will leave the first row at the top.

The list order was corrupted again, since someone sorted incorrectly... I think that for the benefit of all (and as I have little time to spend on this), I'll restrict the usage somewhat:

- The list is now read-only by default
- To make changes, click the UnLock button at the bottom and enter the password: outliners

Hopefully, this will avoid corruption. Again, it would help if users registered...

If this password approach does not help, we can use community access or invitation-based e-mail access methods.
