Outlinely is out, but a lot of key features require a subscription. I’m happy to support this because it is the first outliner for iOS that I can actually use as part of my workflow, and I know how hard it is to make a living selling iOS software… But the price is a bit steep at $24.99 per year.

Thank you for alerting us to this. I rushed to the App Store, downloaded and upgraded to Pro status after only reading the topic. I’m impressed. $25 a year does feel a little steep, but not if it assures us that a useful application continues to improve and remains available.

I kind of agree with Stephen on this one - Outlinely is very good, and a much more convenient outliner than OmniOutliner (although the latter has useful features for certain use cases). It will be good to see how it develops.
However, I think the $25 subscription is high, especially with Bear at $15. I’d have liked to see a more realistic annual subscription. I’m prepared to pay this kind of price for the first year, but after that, much will depend on how it evolves.
If Bear gains folding/outliner features, things will get much trickier. I prefer Bear’s exceedingly elegant “hybrid preview” approach, and if Bear was capable of folding at headings, that’s all it would take - I fear Outlinely would probably take a back seat.
There’s another technical issue here: because Outlinely folds at tabs/indentations, it has to use XML as the base file format. This is nowhere near as convenient as the simple text used by Bear. If Bear introduced folding at headings, it wouldn’t have to change from text - I’m sure such a trick could be done at the interface level, not at the file format level. Just as Bear currently folds away completed tasks - that’s simply a UI trick, not a file format complication.
On the other hand, Outlinely’s XML format means that in principle, much more complex things could eventually be added. It’s getting lively in there!

I Beta tested, too, and found the iOS product very useful. Over the past couple of weeks or so I have tended to reach for it when noodling something.
Is it more useful than Editorial? Editorial, to my mind, is what you describe here: Bear with folding. Editorial is a clean, markdown environment with a lot of great touches to move things around, export in useful formats, and even plan things in a TaskPaper format. So there’s some duplication of functions between Outlinely and Editorial. What is the real difference: it might come down to the look on the screen (outliner versus text editor) and the presence of functions you use most often. Editorial, though, I only had to buy once.
