Amidst the excitement about the release of Scrivener for iOS, it would be easy to overlook that OutlineEdit has just taken another step forward with the release of version 1.6. Here's what's new according to the developer:
- Pinboard for Today View: keep to do lists and notes always in reach, just one swipe away
- Refined editing: automatic inline enumeration. Group guides. Gentle animation underlines fluidity and dynamism
- Better fullscreen: reconsidered layout & always visible clock
- and so many more refinements that touch every aspect of the application
I think OutlineEdit is the best utilitarian outliner for the Mac... that is, if you just need to put together a list of any kind, quickly and without a lot of fuss, it's the go to app, just edging out Outlinely. It would be doubly useful, however, if it had an iOS version.

I agree with Steve. Robin has done very nice work steadily adding useful features to OutlineEdit. Its feature set is quite rich. My favorite is the Safari extension from grabbing text from pages and moving it into an outline. I use apps such as OutlineEdit as a tool in between research and writing -- and OutlineEdit fits into that spot well.

Hey there,
I always love to see what's happening at OutlinerSoftware.com!
It has been two years since OutlineEdit gained some attention here and I think it has developed nicely since then.
But progress can never stop and I definitely intend to bring the application on a more regular release schedule when - finally! - nearing version 2.0.
There are many interesting things in the works, so stay tuned for more.
Best regards,
Robin
PS: Feel free to grab one of the following promo codes for OutlineEdit 1.6 from the Mac App Store:

OutlineEdit, as of this writing, appears to be free in the Mac App Store. I am not sure how long this has been the case, but it surprised me.

I sent a Tweet to Robin asking about this and he responded saying that it has been free since summer. He said, "I think all basic features should be free. But there is more to come!"
A little cryptic, but the implication is that there will be a pro version with new features.

Thank you, Stephen, for finding that out.
(Here's hoping that, if a pro version is introduced, those of us who paid for the software get a free upgrade.)

Why? Robin is entitled to whatever he charges, just like any developer. There are not enough independents trying to succeed in the "productivity" sector. They deserve every penny.

Yes, I wholeheartedly support such independent developers and encourage paying for their software, as I have done.
Given that the software costs money, and is now being offered for free, I was merely expressing my hope (not a demand or anything) that those who invested in the software would be rewarded in some way for that investment if a paid upgrade is introduced. I like to support independent developers and I also like to get the best value I can on what I spend such that my expenditures feel worthwhile. I think that's relatively normal.

Robin has issued an updated version 1.7 that adds QuickLook -- which is really useful in Mac apps like DEVONthink and Curio that use Quick Look to display the contents of imported files.
Still free. Hope he gets around to making us pay for his work someday.
