Hi and thanks for reading my post!
I am looking for an outliner that can do symbolic links. So far I have narrowed my search down to the following list, but maybe anybody knows about some good outliner that isn't listed? Or maybe any experiences with the ones on my list?
Thanks in advance!
:)

Hi Karel,
UltraRecall is another candidate where it is called "logical linking"
While the further development of UltraRecall has slowed down (or better: has stopped) in the meantime the developers are still publishing bug fix releases and the application is very stable and fast.
Best,
Dominik

For OS X: NeO Outliner (http://d-lit.com/macosx/neo_outliner/

I can confirm Neo for OS X, a very powerful, yet affordable outliner with symlinks
For any operating system that can run Emacs, org mode is a fantastic, if a little idiosyncratic outliner sporting symbolic links amongst many other features.

I use MyInfo and Zim Wiki a lot: they both support links where you can edit the text of the link name/label. Is that a 'symbolic link'?

Would you please define "symlinks" in the sense you use it. See generally https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link
So far as I know, NoteCase Pro has never had the capability to create symlinks.
Best regards,
Paul

Hi!
The way I use the term symbolic link is the ability of one node in a node tree to have multiple parents. Or in other words - one node may appear in several places in the node tree, but it is still just one node.
Similar thing is achieved in windows with Junction points.
"So far as I know, NoteCase Pro has never had the capability to create symlinks."
Well, it depends on how we define symbolic link (and there's no use in going academical :-)
NCP does something that may or may not be called a symbolic link. It more or less works for my needs so that's why it is in the list. Try this: node properties/link/link to an internal note...

Hi,
it is very nice function, but it is not a symbolic link. See my answer about symbolic links below, pls.

Hi,
I noticed org mode, but the learning curve seems a bit steep and the visuals not too appealing. Is my quick perception correct?

Wow! I did not expect so many replies. Thank you all kindly!
I should have mentioned my OS, though. Sorry about that. I use Windows.
One app suggested here that is new to me (and runs on Windows :-) is Ultra Recall. I am going to check it out ASAP.

IT APPEARS THERE IS NO SUB-BRANCHING WITHIN THE THREAD, SO MY PREVIOUS REPLIES LOOK CONFUSING. SORRY ABOUT THAT. I WILL POST THE AGAIN WITH QUOTES.

It's not technically an outliner, but TheBrain is great with giving nodes multiple places to appear. While the full version is on the expensive side, there is a free version that is quite functional.

PiggyDB allows nodes to be descendants of multiple parents. In this sense it is the best at automatic cross-referencing. It's relatively easy to use, and open source. I recommend taking a look: https://piggydb.net/

MyInfo does what you call a symbolic link.

It seems to me that there is no definite form of a "symlink".
There are subtle differences in how symlinks are handled. When one creates a symlink in UltraRecall all children of the symlinked topic are symlinked, too. Whereas in MyBase (MyInfo?) only the chosen topic is symlinked, not its children.
And it seems that MyBase can't export symlinks.

This sounds like cloning to me. MyInfo does that.

Sounds like you're talking about NoteCase Pro's ability to create node clones. They can be located anywhere and any edits in any clone or the original are automatically propagated to all clones and the original.

Hi,
just wantd to thank for all replies. I dont have any time to read them and reply now but hopefully in a week or so I will. BTW so far I am very impressed with Ultra Recall. Very customizable, very clever. Great symlinks (even the title name of all the linked nodes changes, nice one. not for everybody, but very good for me)
Best regards,

Not exactly a timely reply but I'm surprised that no one mentioned the GrandDaddy of them all, TreePad. Still the best outliner of the bunch, IMHO. I haven't used it in a while but I think the open sourced Cherry Tree also does it.
