Good news: An update of Info Select 10 has just been released. It can be downloaded using the following URL: http://www.miclog.com/ftp/is/10/ . I now use IS10 (and before IS 2007) for some five years mainly as a document management system and I am extremely satisfied. Only can recommend IS. Completely different from the ransomware / vaporware EN.

Why do you recommend it? What things does it do better than everything else?

@bobmclain: It is one of the oldest outliners that exist. Also, IS is updated quite frequently. Small footprint; you also can run it from an USB stick. Unless EN, there has been not password theft. Your data is not in the cloud: it belongs to you.
EN had quite a hard time as a lot of users have become disillusioned. Also, imagine if EN shuts down. What about your data? UL is a copy of IS.
But you will find all that by googling anyway. Guess the question rather was rhetorical.

by EN, you mean Evernote?
Evernote's not cloud-only. You also have your data in a local database, accessible with desktop client software. So if Evernote goes under, you still have your data, right?

I've always had a soft spot for InfoSelect. I used to use it seriously about ten years ago, but the updates seemed to make it worse, not better, so I didn't upgrade after being dissatisfied with 2007. It's nice to see that they continue to issue minor updates, but it is scary to see that their website still has a copyright notice of 2009. Not to mention that it costs $160 to upgrade or $250 for a new license. They do have annual subscription pricing of $70 a year, but then if you do that you're held just as hostage as you would be with Evernote.

@Hillman
No, it wasn't rhetorical. I know what InfoSelect can do. I even tried it myself, years ago, and didn't find it remarkable. I was hoping to get some insight into your experiences with it and how specifically you're using it, since you recommend it and mentioned it in a couple of threads, and since it has just had an update.

@bobmclain: Sorry, did not want to be rude... What I like about IS is that it really excels at document management. For example, I download all emails plus the source, combine them as PDFs and store them in IS. Also, I do that with all other correspondence. I know that I only use a small percentage of what IS could do. Whilst the early versions of IS 10 now and then crashed, this issue has been eliminated some two years ago. Now, it is quite reliable. Moreover, I know who is behind IS but then again, some when that might become an issue, since there is reliance on more or less one person only. Then again, I always can use IS on a Virtual PC. If Evernote stops, you will loose your data. I know that you can use EN offline but I guess that is not really the purpose of EN. It should be accessible all the time on all devices, so the majority will use the online version.
But as Stephen Zeoli wrote on this forum, it is expensive. If you compare the price of IS with the price of Ultra Recall or similar outliners, the difference is huge, I have to admit that. I have purchased IS, rather than "rented" IS 2007 & later I upgraded to IS 10. Stephen Zeoli also is right writing that IS 10 is not really an improvement compared to IS 2007. That has been discussed extensively on the old IS Yahoo forum, but what can we do?
I guess even if IS 10 support would stop, you still could use it for the next couple of years. I also use Lotus Organizer 6.1 on Win 7 and it works. IS looks kind of trusty, just like Lotus Organizer. But perhaps it is nostalgia, I don't know.

I still don't get why you think if Evernote shuts down, I will lose my data. The desktop client runs on my computer, would continue to do so, the data is stored in in a local database, the data can be exported to various formats, so it doesn't seem to be risky that way.

jimspoon: I am not really an EN specialist but the two URLs below perhaps provide further insight.
https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/29001-offline-massive-confusion/
http://jasonkincaid.net/2014/01/evernote-the-bug-ridden-elephant/
EN's strong point is the cloud and I am not sure whether all users make regular backups. It is the same with GMail: If they shut down, the data is gone. Again, who does back up his GMail a/c?
But I have to concede that both EN & GMail in nowadays environment (multiple devices, always on) are more convenient than IS. In fact, for that purpose, IS could not be used at all. It is a different philosophy.
Yet, it should be accepted that there also is a trade-off, i.e. security vs. convenience.
