... has just been released by Jesse Grosjean at Hog Bay Software: http://www.foldingtext.com A simple, Markdown-based outliner for the Mac.

Perhaps, to be more accurate, I should have written: a simple, Markdown-based text editor with outliner features, for the Mac.

I was critical of the first version of FoldingText, but version 2.0 is more refined and usable. It still feels like it is created for computer geeks (not intended as a pejorative, just mean the more technical oriented) than for the general public. It has those oddball Todo and Timer modes. The first seems useful, perhaps, but the Timer feels like a real niche type feature. Plus it's got things like "Node Paths," which I don't even understand. None of this precludes use by people like me. My only concern is that Jesse always seems to find ways to go off on tangents, instead of developing his applications' key functionality. So I worry about that.

Nevertheless, FoldingText does now genuinely feel like a useful app.

Great review, Steve, that in my opinion sums up Folding Text perfectly. (And like your commenter, I too pine for Lotus Agenda. Never mind what it was for - it was just interesting to use!)

Version 2.2 is out in the Mac App Store but not (at least not today) on the developer's site.

This version introduces an optional outline view as a sidebar -- displays anything with headers or .schedule or .todo modes.

Nice, I have to say. But I think, on balance, that I still prefer Outlinely.

Although FoldingText has some great options, like permanent wordcount, GitHub-style task lists, comments/highlights etc. (albeit using a non-standard syntax).

However, much will depend on who brings an iOS version to market first. I'm suspecting Outlinely will lead the charge here!
