Mori gets an update

I have no comment on this (I haven’t downloaded the new version), but given Mori’s history in the outlining world, I think it merits mention that the developer of Mori (not the original developer, of course, but the one who now owns it) has released an update:

One feature I have always thought other developers might want to copy is the way Mori does Tag folders. Instead of choosing between a search folder and an editable folder, it functions as both. It automatically gathers items meeting the criteria; and if you enter items directly into the folder, they automatically get tagged with the metadata the folder is searching for. Thanks for the heads up on this. When I first switched to the Mac, I tried Mori. It has two features that are not common on Mac OS info managers: 1. Notes can have sub-notes; and 2. custom columns. The latter I found difficult to use. All in all, I thought there were better choices. I’ll be interested to give this new version a try, but it will have to blow me away to shell out the new higher price for it.

I am interested in anything people can tell me about Mori, particularly with regard to how it compares to Notetaker. As I recall, both are derived from a program that was originally on Next, but the developers went their separate ways. That resulted in Notetaker, and HogBay Notebook, which then became Mori. I know that there was a thread on this back in 2010, but I am curious if there is any more with regards to comparison.

I currently use Devonthink Pro Office on my Mac for heavy lifting with regard to info managment. I also use some specialized software like Papers to manage my PDF collection of scientific papers. I have a license for Notetaker, I don’t use it that much, but I am trying to work it into my notetaking. Right now most of my notetaking is analog, with a pen and notebook. Not as easy to search as an electronic version would be.

Hi Jim,

I don’t think that Mori is related to NoteTaker. I think NoteTaker’s “twin” is Circus Ponies’ Notebook. Mori was developed by Jesse Grosjean of Hog Bay Software, who sold it on three or four years ago but has since developed TaskPaper and WriteRoom. Jesse is self-evidently a talented developer.

As far as information management is concerned, I too use DevonThink on the Mac. For a while I experimented with various less heavyweight, less sophisticated applications, using them instead of DevonThink when it seemed undesirable to bring out the DT Magnum weapon. But since DT introduced the Sorter and Take Note, and various Applescripts, bookmarks and extensions were written to allow notes and documents to be imported into DT quickly and easily, I’ve used DT alone. To mix metaphors freely, the advantage of having all one’s notes and documents under one flag has outweighed the continuing slight disadvantage of occasionally using a jackhammer to crack a nut.
