Hi, I have been using outliner "keynote" for awhile, however, I feel that it can be greatly improved by having an actual outline within the note section. As below images.

Any ideas which softwares similar to keynote, have this capabilities. Thanks!

If I understand you correctly you are looking for a single pane outliner? Just type "single pane" into the search box on the left and it will show you some past discussions with suggestions both for the Mac and Windows.

BTW, my favourite is Natara Bonsai. You can watch the screencast "Bonsai Desktop: Making Child and Parent items" over here:
http://www.natara.com/bonsai/ScreenShots.cfm

While the screenshots themselves don't do a good job of showcasing its outlining capabilities (it's marketed as a "to do" application), all the extra panes and columns can be turned off, and you will end up with a very clean interface that is essentially an outliner.

yah, I can only find single pane outliners that can do this.
but I really want a multi-pane outliner to have this feature as well.

Natara bonsai is a great software, it's one of my primary outliners now.
I bought the desktop + palm version.

Dr Andus, I wonder whether you or anyone else uses Bonsai solely on the desktop.

Also am curious to know how Bonsai has been used other than as a task manager.

Thanks.

You can achieve something like this using Noteliner.

See this screenshot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/155244/Noteline%20-%20outline%20of%20outlines.jpg

Yes. I only use it as a desktop software on the PC, exclusively as an outliner (although I do have the Palm app as well, I never really managed to find a way to integrate it into my activities.)

Also
am curious to know how Bonsai has been used other than as a task
manager.

Basically by switching off all the panes and task management columns and by just using it as a plain vanilla single pane outliner. I like it because it's fast to use (to enter and structure text), can colour code the levels by hierarchy, and zoom in and out of branches and collapse levels selectively (1,2,3 4 or show all). The only thing that could be improved for my liking if notes could also be displayed in-line, but, oh, well... I can live with that.

Steve,

Another impressive performance from Noteliner; the concept of 'pages' seems indeed to make sense.

It is an impressive program. It still has quirks, like the navigation pane doesn't refresh properly yet. But Sam is constantly working to improve it.

Humm... I'm a bit confused here...

Can't this be just as easily be done using a single-pane outliner where one can hoist on individual main branches (to provide more focus) ?

Alexander Deliyannis 9/16/2011 8:17 pm
If I understood correctly, the concept is to _also_ maintain the overview provided by the tree pane.

My impression is that the original question related to being able to have an outline of outlines. (In fact, there are a few programs that can actually do this: Debrief Notes, ListPro from Iliumsoft). I was pointing out how you could get the same effect using Noteliner, although it isn't exactly what the questioner seemed to want.

(If this has been partly posted already, my apologies - I hit a wrong key and the Reply page disappeared forever!)

KeynoteNF http://code.google.com/p/keynote-nf/ is an update of the old Trianglos software.

It accepts tables far better than the original, I believe.

So I think you can have (non-collapsible) outline within a table in the Notes area.

Alternatively, slide the notes window to reduce it "out of the way" and work with a more extended Tree. You can also use checkboxes on the tree if you choose to do so.
