New hierarchical task manager for Windows

As far as I recall, there are relatively few task managers for windows that offer what I might call 'true outlining' (unlimited nesting/hierarchy of tasks). The main ones that come to mind are Ecco Pro, InfoQube, Amode (from Mindsystems), and ToDoList (from Abstract Spoon). Anyway, a new one seems to have just appeared called The Now Organizer:

http://www.thenoworganizer.com

It features multiple views, including Outline and Mind Map. I've barely tested it yet, so I don't have much else to say at the moment, but I thought I'd give a heads -up here.

I tried to install the trial version and Norton had a fit and erased it from my computer. I guess I'll sit this one out.

That doesn't sound good. I've already reached the conclusion myself that I won't be using this software for now (although I'll keep an eye on further development), but I sure hope I haven't installed any malware, as I'm presently on a Windows installation that lacks antivirus software. Thanks for your report.

Hi Guys,

I'm Kevin and I work on the support team for The Now Organizer. You haven't downloaded any malware or wild software. When you say Norton gave you a fit with it, what does that mean? Did the software load, work, error out, etc? Let me know.

Also, if you guys have trouble please shoot an email to support@thenoworganizer.com and we'll quickly respond.

And yes, it's true, we're new but willing to do what it takes to make sure our new customers are up and running and most importantly, happy. :0)

And lastly, we have a ton of ongoing development to add additional features that may be missing at the present moment.

Adding to your list, GoalEnforcer is a visual task manager outliner that handles an infinite number of subtask levels (unlimited visual nesting).

As I tried to install your application, Norton AntiVirus intervened and deleted it saying it was removing a threat to my computer.

Could I just mention a quite nice hierarchical to-do solution: Task List Guru (free) and its big brother Swift To-Do List (both from www.dextronet.com). Good, sensible design. Only downside: no networking. But apparently they're working on that.

I know it's been mentioned before, but you could also take a look at Pagico. And for a very nice (free) alternative, try Tonido (the Workspace component, which allows you to hierarchise tasks and also attach more or less anything to each task, including comments, notes, files, other tasks etc. etc. etc.). It synchronises directly between machines on a network, and can also synchronise over the Internet. Better still, you can get your own "TonidoPlug", which is a tiny Linux server you can use to set up your own mini-network (obviously that isn't free). Tonido Workspace also includes chat/forum/calendar/notes/file management components, so you can use it as a complete work organisation tool for a team.

Cheers,
Bill

Just to comment that I've experience Norton becoming over sensitive over the past few weeks, with it deleting quite harmless installations such as Personal Brain updates, so it's a distinct possibility that it's making a mistake with this software too.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the suggestion. As far as I can tell, these programs do not allow hierarchical arrangement of tasks, but only hierarchical arrangement of task lists (in other words, they're like two-pane rather than one-pane outliners). In my original post, I was referring to the ability to add a sub-task to a task, then a sub-task to that sub-task, etc.

Norton gave me no problems when I installed The Now Organizer.

It's a bit of a half program at the moment - it still needs a lot of development to get it to a decent level, if you ask me. No help file yet, no preferences, no ability to show "completed" tasks or get a one back into view if you complete it accidentally, I don't get the "rewards" idea, and its interface reacts rather slowly. I also managed to crash it within about 30 seconds just by clicking before it was ready. Could be usable but it needs lot of work ...

Also, a personal dislike of mine, no geographic address or further company information about the developers. Tends to sow the seeds of doubt in one's mind, especially if one's anti-virus package plays up.

As I just mentioned it in another thread, MLO http://www.mylifeorganized.net/ works like that too.

A couple more for reference:

- ListPro http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/lp_netbook.php One of the most powerful, with unlimited levels and excellent filtering

- Ultrarecall http://www.kinook.com/UltraRecall/ though not simply a task manager, should be able to structure tasks hierarchically in unlimited levels

- Notecase Pro http://www.virtual-sky.com/ should be able to do so too; as far as I understand, one can create a task out of any item and there is no level limitation (though I myself do not use its task management features)

Just wanted to point out so there are no fears of malware or viruses. We've had our software tested by a couple of download sites and they've given us the 100% clean stamp.

CNET Downloads and Softpedia.

Team Task Manager will work for you also. Inexpensive, and a free trial is available on their website - http://www.deskshare.com/team-task-management.aspx
