Hello group,

Have a look here:

http://www.kworkshop.com/

They have simplified KnowledgeWorkshop a lot. Some of the most interesting features:
- hoisting (!)
- web clipping including correct citation (you can choose the style)
- simpler to use (you are not forced to use the strict structure in KnowledgeWorkshop 1.x)
- An item can have one or more parents
- a very powerful text editor (tables, paragraphs, outlienes etc.
- open items in tabs (not new in v2 but worth to mention)
- Outlook integration
- Attibutes sets (metadata)
- Improved search

One of the outstanding features of KW are the 'Associated Items'. Just Idea Mason provides a similar functionality.

The beta I have installed is very stable.

Dominik, thanks for the tip.

I have downloaded KW, and quickly looked it over.

I was very critical of the first version and its upgrades; especially at the beginning it was over-priced, and over-hyped, both of which suggested to me that the developers -- or their pr people -- were out of touch with the competition and what the market would bear. It seemed there was a desire perhaps to market to academia; if so, perhaps it was felt the higher costs were justified. I have always been against the notion that one socks higher costs to business and institutions because a) they can afford it, and (b) they have tax deductions that offset some of the cost.

My first look at version 2 impresses me if for no other reason than the fact it appears the developers have listened to what people have told them.

The hoist is good, as is the simplified tree structure.

I like the forms, the ability to have multiple appearances of a document, or cloning.

I wish that KW wasn't as Microsoft oriented as it is, since I use neither Explorer nor Outlook.

I wish that there was a way to change font, size, and colour in the tree for ease of readability; this is my concern also with UltraRecall. It will be interesting to hear how well you think the new KW stacks up against UR.

I wish that rather than use news group, the developers would use conventional groups or forum software -- it is easier. It is literally years since I have read news groups, which IMHO are jungle cf the world of groups and forums.

Domink, I'd be pleased to hear more about your eplorations with KW.

My proclivity for columns will probably keep me using MyInfo. I would love to be able to return to ADM, but Eric's behaviour and the lack of communication gives little reason to feel confident in the product long term. Incidentally, I wrote to his partner Arne, and exchanged a couple of nice posts -- however, I do not know what has come of it.

In closing, kudos to KW's developers for making some significant changes.

Dominik, Maybe I missed it but I couldn't find link to beta at that URL. Can you re-direct me to the exact location, please. Thanks.

Hi, Jan,

At the bottom of the home page, there are three boxes. The center box has scrolling news. The link to the beta download appears in this box. You may need to place your cursor over the box to get it to scroll... I'm not sure.

Found it -- forget it. Sorry for confusion.

Beware of Knowledge Workshop version 2.0 beta

I installed it, used it for a bit and found several bugs. At that point I decided to remove it from my computer, but got an error message saying the uninstall failed. I've sent a message to the company, but have not gotten a response as of yet.

Too late for me. I had the same experience: the uninstall failed. No answer as yet from the company.

Stephen,

I can confirm the same issue. Too bad!
It is not possible to de-install the beta of KnowledgeWorkshop. The first positive impression of KW2 has gone. When a company releases an application with such a serious bug then it I am not interested in testing further.

A beta version with an uninstall bug is bad, but a company with bug that doesn't acknowledge or reply to support requests to fix the bug are a bunch of cowboys! Anybody else heard back from these jokers about how to remove this?

Nine days after I emailed them I got this reply today:

subject Re: Beta test feedback
Thanks for reporting this Mark.
We are working to fix this problem with the KW installer.
In the meantime, if you want to uninstall this version you can use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility (msicuu.exe). You can get this from:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Regards,
Stephen

The Microsoft cleanup utility as best I can tell, because I gave it a try, only removes the KW reference in the Add/Remove dialog, not the program itself. I manually uninstalled it by deleting the program and the registry entries. I think I got everything.

A pathetic response.
