For my sins, I've also become a kind of clearing
house for information about Blackwell/Bekon Idealist, a venerable free-form text
oriented database.

What has become of it? I find a number of mentions on the web, but the Bekon site is offline.

Greetings:

I am a scientist at one of the big pharmaceutical companies that people love to hate.

Visual effects artist.
I check in here occasionally to see if someone has found any small, useful and elegant software for managing a large amount of inter-dependent files and associated data... Especially where the directory structure itself is labyrinthine and unchangeable.

Besides being a trophy husband? I am a recent Ph.D. in history. I found this forum when I was looking for software that would write my dissertation for me. I still lurk here hoping someone will find software to revise my dissertation into an award winning book that will get me an academic job. I'm now on a Mac, using devonthink, scrivener, and Omnioutliner. I miss brainstorm, and I periodically wonder what biblioscape looks like these days.

Bekon folded some years ago, and Idealist is now as far as I know abandonware. The final version was 5.5 (v.4 was a total disaster, and I've heard that v.5 can be unstable). I have the installation file for version 3 (the last version actually written by Blackwell programmers before its sale to Bekon) and am happy to share it with anyone who wants to experiment. I have managed to get v.3 to work on everything from Windows for Workgroups through to XP Pro and on Linux (with the help of Wine), and I'm just about to experiment with it on Vista.

Thanks for the kind offer, Laurence.

I am about to switch most of my PCs to Windows 7. So a software that is no longer under development is probably not the best solution :-)

I started a business last year that markets customized portraits and sculptures made out of LEGO bricks. I keep product ideas, marketing ideas, pictures, and any other business related info in my software. I am presently using Evernote, but in the process of switching to Devonthink. Prior to switching to a Mac two years ago, I utilized InfoSelect for just about everything.
