New Outliner for Windows

Hello,

I am a big fan of outliners.
I tried almost every outliner for Windows. Unfortunately, they all
look like they were developed 10 years ago with same Windows 98 style.
Personally, I think one of the best outliners ever is OmniOutliner.
Unfortunately, there is no version for Windows.

Being a developer, I decided to create my own outliner with focus on
usability.
And a week ago I released the very first version of it.

Currently it is a pretty simple outliner but it already has features
which other software doesn't, like rich text in every row or styles.

So you are welcome to try it:
UV Outliner
http://uvoutliner.com

The project is currently in the very beginning, but the first version
is already out.

I will be very glad to hear any suggestions, ideas, comments or questions!

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Fedir Nepyivoda

Woah, an actual single-pane outliner for Windows. Crazy.

But...where's the hoist feature?

Though, seriously, that's awesome. Thanks man

that's great, the missing piece on Windows.
Many thanks.

Thank you very much, will buy two licenses today.

Has been a long wait - but worth it:
- nice looking
- very usable, sleek

Please don't bloat it with features.

best regards

At last, a usable outliner for my netbook. Thank you. gB

Fedir,

I like the concept of your new outliner very much and will soon be purchasing a license.

Can you give us a sense of what features/functions you are planning to add to it?

Thank you.

Fedir, I think you're off to an excellent start!

I appreciate the simplicity and the .NET infrastructure doesn't show at all in terms of the program's response. I like the ability to switch off the 'Inspectors' and just have the writing area open. Also, the fact that it exports to tab indented plain text outlines means its content can be opened in a whole range of programs.

I just bought two licenses ;-)

There's a couple of functionalities I'd like to suggest for your development map; both are related to import/export, which I think is very important for a new product:

- Import of tab indented plain text and import/export of OPML, another popular format.

- An improvement of the HTML export so that levels are recognised when they are opened in MS Word; this will boost UV Outliner's usability for everyone needing to share information the 'classic' way.

I would like to second the support of OPML. This would be great for exchangig files with Mac outliners.

Hoist feature is one of the most wanted. It will be included in the next release!

All planned features you can view at:
http://uvoutliner.uservoice.com/

By the way, you are welcome to add a new feature request and vote for existing ones.

Alexander, thank you for your support!

I have added all your requests to feature list. I think most of them will be included in the next release.

Looks very nice and light-weight. Anyone want to compare it with Natara's Bonsai?

Good start, Fedir. I've purchased a licence and I look forward to seeing the program develop.

Congratulations Fedir

I'll be supporting your venture as well. There's definitely a gap in the market for a dedicated one pane windows outliner as a search of this forum will confirm.

Alex stole my thunder but I'll repeat that a one button export to Word IMO is an important addition to marketing the product in the Windows world.

Is the app fully portable i.e. can run independently off an external USB device?

Thanks and good luck

It can run from any device. However it depends on .NET Framework 3.5 which is ~100 MB if downloaded using Microsoft Installer. (~250 MB if redistributed separately)
Fortunately, Windows 7 already ships with it.

Thanks and good luck

Thank you!

Hi. I'm fairly new to the use of one-pane outliners. I would apprerciate it if someone would describe the advantages of Fedir's elegant-looking program over using Word's outlining functions. Thank you.

Hi Jon,

There are many advantages to using a dedicated tool like UV Outliner. I'll start off by just mentioning the one difference that I think is most critical: Unlike dedicated outliners, Microsoft Word allows for only nine outline levels. This is probably sufficient, in most cases, for outlining the major sections of a document (which is probably the purpose for which the tool is designed), but when it comes to complex brainstorming and the like, the nine level limit will start to cramp your style.

Theoretically, it would have little advantage over Word's outliner, but using an outliner should be as transparent as possible. That is, while working with an outliner, your complete focus and concentration should be on the content of the material you are creating and not on using the outliner. (This is one reason a single-pane outliner is superior in many ways to multi-pane applications.) I've found that Word's outliner is not very intuitive, especially since it depends on what viewing mode you happen to be in. So it has never passed that transparency test with me. I've not used Fedir's outliner much yet, so I can't say for sure that it will, in fact, be more transparent, but my sense is that it will be.

If you're using Word's outliner and are happy with it, I'd say there's no reason to look further. (Although, there are a few other benefits to Fedir's approach: for one, you can add check boxes to items in your list.) Fedir is suggesting that additional features will be added, such as a hoist and these may also give his a approach and advantage over Word in the future.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

Very nice product - the version you have posted is already very useful. One feature that appears to be missing that would be very important for me:

- Rich text paste from other programs.

For instance, I would like to cut and paste from a Word doc and retain formatting (at least bold, underline, and fonts).

I can confirm that UV Outliner won't run off a USB device plugged into a PC without .NET 3.5. That will drastically limit its useability for me as I would have used it at work. A shame.

Yep, unfortunately, if you are unable to install .NET framework 3.5 on the computer with XP, nothing can be done here. Sorry.
After migration to Windows 7, there will be no such problem.

Sincerely,
Fedir
