Walling Monthly Journal

I received an email from Walling saying that they are going to be publishing a monthly journal to keep people apprised of the redevelopment of the program. On the one hand, it is always nice to know what developers are considering for their applications. But on the other, there's a part of me that just says fix the damn program already and get it up and running correctly, especially the we clipper; it's not rocket science. I let my subscription renew this summer to both see where they are headed, and because I did not have time to migrate my files to Craft.do. If they cannot get it together by my next renewal, I am sure I will be cancelling. They are not like for like applications, but Craft.do offers a lot of what I initially liked about Walling. Curious to hear what others think as the journals get published each month.

Hi, Ken,

Any further thoughts about Walling? I used to use the app a few years ago and liked it. But when it changed hands I got cold feet about continue to store information in it. I have looked at it again, and would consider upgrading to Premium, but the newest update on their "What's New" page is from two years ago. Do you feel they are serious about continuing to improve Walling, or are they blowing smoke to keep people subscribed? Thanks for any insights you or anyone else might have.

Walling's new owners seem to be moving very slowly. Maybe it takes time to situate in a new codebase, maybe the old codebase needs a more serious rewiring and fumigation than was expected, maybe it's turned into a bigger job than they thought they initially could handle.

FYI a Windows/Android Reddit user was recently looking for a MyMind replacement and after considering a dozen options narrowed it down to Walling as well as Fabric and Kosmik.

Kosmik's dev entered the discussion to say that they were upgrading tags and working on adding folders.

I have pretty much given up on Walling. My subscription runs until this summer, and unless they really announce the latest thing since sliced bread, I just need to migrate out my data. Craft.do has taken its place. It is not perfect, but it works well enough for what I use Walling for. I also considered going to Milanote, but Craft is substantially less and offers me other features that I use from time to time, like publishing web pages.

I see lots of products mentioned in the linked articles. I took a quick look at Kosmik, but the price is a bit rich for my needs and budget. I'll try to look at some of the others when I get a chance. Thanks for the links.

satis and Ken,

Thanks for the feedback. I sent an email to the Walling team (through the contact form on the website) asking what the plans are and haven't gotten a response in 24 hours. That's not a good sign. I'll post here if they do respond.

Don't hold your breath on a timely response, Stephen. When they first launched, I always received a prompt reply from the same person, and the response was detailed and personal. I think that person may still be there, but the last time I wrote, I cannot recall if I did not receive any reply, or received it weeks later. Any way I try to look at it, it's still a mess. They are focusing on Ai, something I do not need, and they have not fixed things that I do need, like a web clipper. All in all, a painful decline of a program that had some promise.
