This is a partial post from Tom Davis about the outlining features in the forthcoming version 6. The beta is slated to begin on July 15.
Zoot looks to be pretty impressive.

"Another unannounced feature made it into the mix also. Z6 will feature a
full-blown outliner complete with auto-level formatting, auto-level sorting,
Rich Text formatting, Hoisting, and some slick re-ordering capabilities.
The outliner is implemented as an "Outline" Item Type, but you can also use
it as a document type, so if you want an outliner for use with your Task
items, you can do that."
