The Affinity products, Affinity Publisher, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Photo, are 50% off for black Friday.

All three Affinity products have a learning curve, but it's not bad.

Desktop publishers are not word processors, of course.

For pamphlets, I like to write in a word processing document. The Outline or Navigation pane in the word processor lets me keep track of what text goes in which article in the pamphlet. That way I have one file with all the "copy" for the pamphlet in one place.

My preference is to copy plain text into Affinity. If I paste formatted Word text, Affinity picks up the styles from Word. Nice, if that's what you want to do. I prefer to let Affinity handle all aspects of styles.

Mellel (Mac only word processor) is on sale for 30% off. Regularly $69.99, now $48.99. You can bundle Bookends with Mellel for a total of $80.49 for both,

It's not like Word. You can use it like a simple text editor without a learning curve. To take advantage of all Mellel has takes a little time. I found it worth the investment.

Mellel's most recent feature is Mathjax support.

I think its support for epub is unmatched among word processors. I feel no need for Vellum. It reads and writes a variety of file formats, but works best with its own proprietary format.

"Proprietary" is not descriptive, though. Mellel documents are XML in zip files. BBEdit will directly open Mellel files, which are very simple to understand. I don't feel locked in by Mellel's document format. My text remains mine.

Mellel probably isn't for everyone. For those it works for, it's awesome.
