XTiles — 2023

Thought I’d start a new xTiles thread since most of the earlier discussion was about a much less mature product.

How many here are using or have given xTiles a spin? It’s interesting and certainly worthy of ongoing discussion. It’s incredibly versatile for various tasks and is able to be used in many environments. For me, the visual appeal is certainly there and I have found it surprisingly robust for many productivity tasks. I’m curious about what others think at this point in xTiles development.

I agree with everything you say about xTiles. These guys are from Ukraine, so I decided to support them with a lifetime subscription. All that said, I actually haven't used it very much, because I find Walling to be a similar but more robust... However, Walling is visually overwhelming sometimes and I find myself toying with the idea of switching to xTiles. There is a lot to like about both apps. For those who haven't tried xTiles, it feels a lot like a notebook to me, where I can write notes, paste in files and URLs onto large pages.

Thanks for bringing xTiles up again!

And your observations are spot-on as well. I, too, have done the Walling to xTiles back to Walling and back again to xTiles. Your comment about Walling being visually overwhelming reflects my thoughts as well. I have thought maybe the xTiles layout uses white space more effectively?

I actually did a meeting with the X-Tiles staff early on and they were quite excited about their product, and were continuing work despite what was happening in their country. I like a lot of things about the product, but I also tried Walling at the same time and decided to use that as it was more akin to how I wanted to work. I would recommend both to anybody looking for that type of product and wish both companies well. Milanote is another program that is similar in concept (but works with columns instead of walls and bricks).

I love the ideas behind xTiles, and to some extent the execution. What I find problematic is the speed – or lack of it. Switching from one tab to another takes a surprisingly long time. Well, not surprising, because there's presumably a lot going on behind the scenes. But for me, slow rendering is an issue.

I'm just adding my farthing's worth. I tried it today. Initially felt okay.
But crashed quite often - despite my barely doing anything.
And only one tile style didn't glare in dark mode. Fundamentally it has a dark mode, but all the app's features are designed for light.
So that was me out.

It seems like a dumbed down OneNote. You can do almost all of what this can do on OneNote, and so much more.

At the beginning of this year Evernote was sold off to Bending Spoons, which almost immediately laid off 129 staffers. (When 54 Evernote staffers were laid off in 2018 it was reported that was 15% of the company's workforce - so these recent layoffs are *massive*.)

Evernote is struggling. People were having issues with Evernote and its slow development for many years, and the decision in 2020 to strip functionality while migrating to the slower, more bloated Electron framework did it no favors. I wouldn't use the service or recommend it.

And priced at $120/yr for the Personal tier it's considerably overpriced compared to half that for lifetime XTiles via the ongoing StackSocial deal I'd mentioned a few weeks ago - or other similarly well-supported options like OneNote and Notion.

Is it possible to store files, notes, whatever locally?

They offer a Black Friday special at 50% off.

Not yet. I've requested this feature - the more who do likewise, the more chance it will be implemented ...

Thanks, Graham.

I'll request that feature, too :-)

Well, I started this discussion, so here’s the bottom line on my six months with XTiles. It’s just too slow. The responsiveness is simply not there, and in this world of easy comparisons, it does not hold up for my tastes. There are good things about the app, but the whole thing is way too slow for me - and I’m guessing many others. I would suggest anybody considering it to make the most of a trial before making any commitments. Just being honest.
