And interesting two-pane editor for macOS/Windows that can switch a document on the fly into an editable mindmap and back. New version came out recently with additional features like live document preview, task-status, dark mode and export to PDF. Search, which was a weakness last time we discussed the app, seems to be improved.

You can now export to PDF, HTML, OPML, Word, plaintext, RTF, or as an image. Or you can copy to clipboard as Markdown/HTML/RTF/plaintext. Price unchanged since 2019 at $49.95 but dev posted 20% off coupon RMACAPPS on Reddit. 7-day trial available for download.

I bought version 2 lifetime license, yet version 3 is a paid upgrade!

They've always noted that lifetime licenses were on a per-machine basis, something I noted three years ago.

Could it be that you're using a different computer?

Did you contact them, and if so what did they say? On Reddit the dev replied to someone whose v.2 license didn’t work and he said to email them and they’d reset it.
“email me (hello at writemapper dot com) with your v2 license code or email address, and I'll get this fixed for you! Fyi, the issue is most likely due to needing to reset your license code, and you can find more details here”

I also fell for the "lifetime license" wording. I bought 5 - all for personal use - to be able to use across devices. So in total a big price per user, but I liked the idea.
Now version 3 is out. Not only is the "lifetime license" read as "you are allowed to keep v2 in perpetuity" - vs. "you get new upgrades", there is also no upgrade pricing.
I got some value out of the app but not sufficient ROI to pay full price again, esp. since it's not tied to user and would require again buying a larger quantity.

I like WriteMapper overall. Aside from brainstorming a document from scratch, it seems to work well for importing a document and enriching/reorganising it. The minimal writing environment is nice, I like the dark mode, and the live preview is very good for overview.
Putting the live preview and the mind map side by side shows a weakness of the interface --actually of the interface of most many mapping applications: mind maps take much more screen real estate than their equivalent outlines.
I imported a fairly complex document. In the live preview the whole outline fits in the (4K) screen height and is crystal clear with a well sized font. The mind map has to be zoomed out considerably to fit in the same height and is then barely readable. This can surely be improved with more customisation options for the mind map.

Agreed. The other shortcomings I pointed out to the developer were as follows:
Yep, okay, there's markdown. But...
- there’s no smart punctuation – in a writing app!
- there’s no support for (internal) headers (again, somewhat surprising in a writing app)
- there’s no support for highlighting
- there's no support for fonts (choosing your own)
- there's no support for selecting and exporting multiple nodes (although you can export grouped nodes by tagged colours)
- you can’t link nodes (using e.g. wikilinks – or any other kind of link)
The new positives are:
- nice search function (vastly improved)
- nice Live Preview function
- nice export function (with a very wide selection of options)
- an interesting roadmap
