Today i tried to get my chrome bookmarks in order and tried OmniOutliner.
Import was almost fine with a few glitches like empty items and some help on indentations.

But organizing the 1000 bookmarks, was so tedious.
What i would need is an outliner that works with the same view and in a Norton Commander way (2 pane File Manager) with single stroke copy and move. Doing it all with drag and drop made me give up on this chore.

And yeah, cloned items, lots of cloned items.

Obvious question for you... Mac or Windows ? or both...

The old outliner program Brainstorm has something that sounds very similar to what you want: You can put a "mark" anywhere in a large, complicated outline, and then use a simple key combination to either move or copy entries elsewhere in the outline to that location.
And, of course, Brainstorm has clones - although they call them namesakes.

That would only work well if you have two views open.
THe problem is that you have to leave the source location in the outline and move to the destination losing your source and no way to come back. Using marks would not help too much, then i had to go through the source multiple times to gather all for a target and repeat it for the next target etc. The File Manager guys figured out the correct solution.

Maybe one day when i really want a cleanup i write a file that splits the bookmark html into a file tree and later merges it together again. Thats a quickly written script.

Just to clarify, in Brainstorm one can have 6 marks (M, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and for each there are simple keyboard shortcuts to 'Throw' the source item or a clone of it. So one can have up to 6 'buckets' at time to classify items in.

In other programmes one could use tags to achieve an effect similar to cloning, since an item can have several tags which is equivalent to belonging to several folders. Some programmes make it easy to add tags, e.g., by find-as-you-type.

NC was mentioned in OP. Good Coders remember NC (Norton Commander), very useful for file operations of MANY kinds sp. on very large file numbers & huge files too.

I have been using this extension below since last fall. It is superb as pro coders will agree. One can simulate sub-nodes by creating sub-folders in bookmarks.

I use it on both Chrome & Firefox + 2 privacy focused browsers, one a privacy focused alt. to Chrome & other a privacy alt. to FF. Works well.

As ever not serially recommending products I do not purchase and/or use myself, and no tricky subscription model, no owners' basement database (to sell on your data to offshore_whoever before moving on to next scheme), not even a price (which I actually prefer to free, to support devs). So your data is 100% safe, no trackers and/or sneaky cookies either to collect data. And to top it all, Open Source code on Github, So = 100% peace of mind.

Nothing comes close to manipulating large numbers of bookmarks & their folders/subfolders easily and many ways as in NC.

Thanks, thats almost perfect. As perfect as it can be given the limitations of the API chrome has for extensions.
Because the only thing missing would be to view the bookmarked page while browsing in case that the page title don't give you enough clues why you ever bookmarked it.

Pleasure. IIRC that was my one main gripe last year too. Again from memory, one the phone now, I recall right_clicking a bookmark to open in new tab/window, no joy. IIRC I tried keyboard combos with click too, Ctrl alt shift + dual combos of them, again nothing. Like the best apps, he's made it for himself, maybe search open/closed issues on his GitHub & post feature request, I'm sure he'll see the light, eventually. Another news, great cheap lifetime license outliner/backlinker + even more top features for Android/Chromebooks in the works for over a year, coming later this year, can't say more. Well, Brian has done it.
To open a link in a new tab:

Press CTRL key & Double_Click the link
Opens the link in a new tab, plus it's in the background, so can carry on & open many links fast

OR:

Right_Mouse_Click a link and can have options:
open link in new tab
open link in new window
& more options

Until now there was no right_mouse_click options.

The path to the link (which folder or subfolders) is in top row.
For search results, there is a path column.

Chrome updates extensions usually on launch.
If not: goto

chrome://extensions/

make sure top_right Developer-Mode is on (has many benefits) & click UPDATE button in top_left.
This updates all extensions and also syncs account/bookmarks etc to gmail account as can be seen in

chrome://sync-internals/

(to see last sync, Search for: last synced)

He is adding Drag_and_Drop of links by mouse between the two panes, in the next release.
