With TheBrain recently adding the Roam/Obsidian feature of “unlinked mentions,” I thought it would be worth exploring how people find those useful and what potential use cases (and drawbacks) they may have.
I was recently thinking that unlinked mentions are basically just an automatic search for the title of the note/topic you are currently viewing. I like how it adds a feeling of serendipity to information, but I also wonder how it would fare when you have many thousands of notes and possibly many thousands of mentions. It seems like saved searches in an application like Ultra Recall may be more useful with large data stores -because you can add more criteria than just “find other notes containing the text of this note’s title.”

Yep, that’s the main aspect & POV I’ve been keeping on mind while testing those two this year. Rarely noticed. Came to some interesting conclusions & also new potentials. And due to the nature of my desired data structures, that aspect of the two apps is also why as they currently are, despite being the best of the bunch in this genre, they’re not good enough for my purposes. But the conclusions & potentials I came up with, can be passed on to some other fave devs of mine when I get time. Not in a hurry, ongoing. Or maybe I’ll commission something in the future.
