While it's not as sophisticated as Paperpile, I've been quite impressed with MyBib (https://www.mybib.com/ as a free service, when it comes to online-only referencing tools.
It's probably more suitable for high school students and undergaduate university students with ad hoc referencing needs.
It's particularly handy for capturing news articles with its Chrome extension and getting them instantly formatted as an academic reference (effectively an 'academic' web clipper).
