This is where they shoot themselves in the foot. I’m macOS only. For $50 per year I can have Omnioutliner or purchase a traditional licence for $100. Even at the old Omni prices it would still work out cheaper than $96 per year. Plus I always feel bad with subscriptions as I come away with nothing. Omnioutliner if way more powerful that Dynalist in my experience. Their syncing is great and it works with a family licence. And I’m getting a fully native app.

I own OmniOutliner Pro on Mac and iOS. Even still I forked out for Dynalist. With all the benefits of being a native application OO should be so much better than it is. Yet Dynalist runs rings around it for quality of life features such as wiki linking, markdown and date integration.
OmniGroup need to rethink their approach to OO which has stagnated for far too long.

For Windows users, Omni Outliner is not an option; thus, the need for Dynalist and others like it.
If I use Dynalist every day, and it becomes an integral part of my workflow, the yearly subscription fee is negligible. Given the “nichiness” of this market (it’s easy to assume it’s a big market since everyone *here* talks about it), I imagine that the Dynalist developers realized they couldn’t sustain and grow their business - let alone make a decent profit - by charging a one-off fee to a small group of users. They seem to have found enough users willing to pay a subscription fee, so good for them.

OmniOutliner was one of the first apps I bought when I switched to Mac over a decade ago. I almost never use it. It feels more like an app I would use to create nice looking documents to impress my colleagues rather than a serious place to do serious outlining. I use Dynalist every day for a variety of purposes ranging from my digital bullet journal to keeping relevant contacts at hand.
I’m not hating on OmniOutliner. It is what it is. But if Dynalist were not available, I would use Workflowy or Outlinely or Checkvist before I would use OO. I just don’t find it very useful for nitty gritty daily outlining.
