Any note taking app that syncs over LAN?

I am planning to travel to a remote area where I cannot have Internet access. But, I will configure a router for LAN; would use it to broadcast media and other stuff.

I am now looking for an app that I can write on my mac, and sync it to my android phone over the LAN network.

Devonthink would be the ideal system for this because the database can be stored on a shared local drive. Unfortunately, I have an android phone.

Does anyone know an app that can sync over LAN for android?

I just realized that I can store my notes in rtf and md formats on a shared folder (FTP) and access the folder with explorer apps.

You may want to try out B-Folders https://www.jointlogic.com/

It's a secure notes and passwords manager and it only syncs via LAN. It's been discussed here in the past.

B-Folders is free for Android but you pay for the desktop version (single license for Windows, Mac and Linux).

If you have access to an iPhone or iPod Touch (the latter can be purchased refurbed from Apple for as little as $120, with full, as-new warranty) you can use Apple Notes or any number of other apps, and sync via WiFi between the two devices.

I f I’m not mistaken, Dropbox allows you to sync over local LAN network. So any app that can use Dropbox for data storage would work in your situation.
See https://blogs.dropbox.com/tech/2015/10/inside-lan-sync/

EDIT : Sorry, i missed the point that you were specifically asking for Android apps...

2 of the best, on Windows Android etc, do it:

Notecase Pro:
Detailed custom server functions/setup/sync
Read his server manuals online
Free + paid versions

+

Joplin:
Sync with ones own's servers: webDAV or Nextcloud (+Dropbox & OneDrive too)
Free

Alternatively on Android install app:
Ultimate servers pro + any of it's servers protocols, ftp samba etc

https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/cluster?clp=igM4ChkKEzYwMTYxMjUwMjQ5NDIxMjQ0NDEQCBgDEhkKEzYwMTYxMjUwMjQ5NDIxMjQ0NDEQCBgDGAA%3D:S:ANO1ljLCLKo&gsr=CjuKAzgKGQoTNjAxNjEyNTAyNDk0MjEyNDQ0MRAIGAMSGQoTNjAxNjEyNTAyNDk0MjEyNDQ0MRAIGAMYAA%3D%3D:S:ANO1ljJ9VDU&hl=en_US

Total Commander + his LAN plugin (just add ip number of PC or NAS drive in plugin add server pop-up), will see it. TC is the Best app for Android anyway, his ftp etc clients can see ultimate servers or PC/NAS servers too:

Thank you guys.

I have now tried the apps listed here. Notecase and B-Folders sound promising; probably can use any of them; but, , they all feel clunky, and a bit oldish. So, I am now thiking to go with washere's suggestion: the Total commander is a good idea.

If I am right the steps will be:
1) step my files in ftp folder in the server (USB drive on the router)
2) access the folder on the mac (with the Share feature) and Total commander on the android

is that right washere?
I really don't have experience with local networking.

washere 8/4/2019 5:27 pm
Notecase Pro server config is very advanced & needs experience.

Total Commander (TC) is very easy. It's a single/dual pane file manager. Best all round app on Android. Been using it for a decade.

In images linked below, one of my phones, you see I've installed many of his plugins.

Install from link on previous post TC itself then whatever plugin you need

_____________________
TIPS:

Another image shows, dual pane in landscape:
Settings (3 dots top-right, varies wrt where in app): Configure...: List Windows management: Horizontal Screen: show two panels

You can also swipe in single page or 3 arrows on screen edge, to change panes

Most used icon, copy/move, is bottom icon (2nd left): dog_eared paper icon

First you select a file or folder to copy/move:
Click icon of file/folder on left to select (gets ticked)
Then copy/move icon
Can multi select by clicking icons of files on left

Clicking on name of file, runs it &
On folder name, goes into it

Also long click (click & hold) on a file/folder name, gives pop-up options:
Depends on what it is, try it, copy delete rename etc

You can also do this for setup ftp or LAN shares to modify properties etc
_____________
Setup:

Install TC

Install his ftp plugin (ftp client)
(For an ftp server on Android, you need ultimate servers pro stuff I linked)

Install his LAN (Windows share) plugin too

Get your ftp server running on the router

Check it works with an ftp client you are familiar with, on Mac or whatever laptop

If it works on Mac for you, then try from TC:

Launch TC, at Homepage of TC:

Click on the icon of his ftp plugin you installed:
FTP (File Transfers)

On next screen click on line:

On pop-up box:
Give it any name

Setup page:
Server name (top line) put IP number : port of ftp server, eg see my image below

Enter ftp id & password too, that you setup in server

___________
LAN plugin:

Chances are your USB drive might be seen as a Windows share (samba) too

Click on LAN (Windows share) in TC homepage on launch

Then line:

Give it a name
I usually give the ip number as name

Enter ip number in top line

Tick off smb2 box (faster)

Ok

Then go back to TC homepage, LAN plugin again & you see it there. Click on it, should show your network drive if it has samba (Windows share). Shows most NAS (network hard drives).

____________
Fing app scans & slows ip numbers of all devices on your network:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overlook.android.fing

If you haven't bought a travel router, let me know, I'll recommend a small one & a tiny one.

Tons of features for networking, privacy, etc etc

I myself will be somewhere remote this week, so will probably not see posts here after Monday for a week. If you can see your ftp server on your Mac first, you'll see it on Android too.

Sorry if any type, using Gboard swipe keyboard in Android.

washere 8/4/2019 5:34 pm
The forum parser is setting invisible my lines with angle brackets in previous comment.

When clicking on ftp plugin , then choose:
New Connection

When clicking on LAN plugin, then choose line:
+ New Server

While Dropbox can sync files between computers in the same local network, this sync still requires an internet connection to Dropbox.com which handles what will be updated.

If you're having difficulty setting up the ftp server on the router USB drive, install an ftp server on the Mac, easier, Google it. Then attach the USB drive to the Mac.

I find the way to configure it on the router. I had a little troube for some time because the router doesn't accept in exFat format.

I think I have now understood what you have explained. I will be back to you if I need further assistance. Thank you so much washere.

Good. I'll fly in a few hours, might not be online for a few days.

I recommend an otg USB sd card reader for phone/laptop too when traveling. No need for ftp etc if in a hurry. eBay is cheaper but some sellers falsely say based in the West, but are in China, takes time, so read negative reviews for delivery.

If in a hurry, search on eBay for fast delivery sellers, or can buy on Amazon with prime next day delivery (free one month trial, can cancel) searching for same product title.

OTG phone Sd card reader:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m4084.l1313&_nkw=otg+usb+phone+sd+card

OTG cables adapters etc for devices to connect to phone:

If USB type-C, then adapter to micro USB & full USB. Many cheap plastic ones failed for me over last two years, these 2 metal ones are cool & never failed & cheap:

Bon voyage

I don't like cloud sync. I have a feeling of loss of control and I don't want to worry about unknown use of what I write.

USB devices aren't as reliable as "real" storage, so I don't want to keep my working copies on a cheap thumb drive.

Here's my solution, which I fully anticipate won't be popular. 'S ok.

My Devonthink sync stores are all on a USB stick. I keep all my DT databases in a hierarchy of directories under Documents/DT. I made a quickie Automator script that will search for the DT databases and open them all. Then, File->Synchronize All in DT will make sure the USB drive has a current sync of everything. (Hold down the shift key when you use the File menu in DT to change Synchronize, which just syncs the current database, to Synchronize All.)

Other stuff I care about is synced with Chronosync. I suspect it's not the best, because usually I learn the cool kids all use different stuff than me, but it works well for what I do. It's probably overpriced, but I got it anyway.

Chronosync has a companion product called ChronoAgent (more money). Basically, Chronosync will sync folders, like between my hard drive and my thumbdrive, and it also knows how to sync with another computer over the LAN, if the other computer is running ChronoAgent.

ChronoSync also has a scheduler, which will keep a thumbdrive or ChronoAgent connection current.

If you want a completely free option, allow incoming SSH connections on one computer and run rsync on the other. Macs come with ssh and rsync. On a Mac, enable ssh connections with "sudo systemsetup -setremotelogin on". Now, you can ssh in from another system and get a shell prompt, or run things like rsync that use ssh connections.

Turn inbound ssh off with sudo systemsetup -setremotelogin off, or check it with sudo systemsetup -getremotelogin. Set up automatic rsyncs with crontab -e (uses vi by default).

With Windows, the technique for doing this varies with which Linux distribution you choose for your replacement OS. :-)

Seriously, I'm sure at this late day and age there's an easy way to implement ssh and rsync in the Microsoft world. I don't have a Windows box to mess with, so I'll leave those tips for others.

NoteCase Pro syncs via LAN (or the internet). The desktop version runs on, inter alia, macOS. There is an Android version. They share both an encrypted and a non-encrypted file format. For more details, see the online Help file at User Interface > Dialogs > NoteCase Pro Sync Admin. The Help file is at http://www.notecasepro.com/help.php

@Amontillado: I am also user of Cronosync. It is great pience of software for backingup, and for versioning files
(https://dellu.wordpress.com/2017/04/30/chronosync-is-time-machine-plus-git/

But, the problem is CronoAgent cannot sync to mobiles such as Android. That is the problem I have right now.

@ Marbux: thank you for the suggestion. I am trying NoteCase

Amontillado 8/8/2019 1:03 am
Ah, to Android. Great mobile OS, but not supported by Chronosync.

I recently added scripts to my sync setups. Nothing fancy, just things to add a "last synced" message to a file on the root dir of my thumbdrive, so I can confirm I synced up on the desktop before I left the house.

Another thing it's good for is creating a bootable mirror disk. There may well be better ways to do that, but I like the idea of a second bootable disk with a reasonably fresh image of my work.

That is amazing comment. I never heard of OTG before.
Suddenly, you opened a new world to me.

I am planning to record an interview using my Blue Yeti USB microphone. I never thought of any way of doing it other than the computer + the microphone. As you mention OTG, I realize that I can directly record from my microphone to my phone; even for video.

Wow.
Thank you man.

For backup and sync to just about anything (local/LAN/cloud), you might look at Syncovery (https://www.syncovery.com/ which is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and several other desktop operating systems.

It used to be called "Super Flexible Backup" which is a pretty good description.

Not free, but reasonably priced, under continuous development and well supported.

Thank you man.

If you like OTG stuff, you might like 2 other gadgets I use.

First one is Ravpower FileHub Plus. What is it? Many things:

* Portable Travel Router
* Portable NAS: access mobile USB hard disks or SSDs etc on it's wifi on phones laptops tablets etc.
* 5 Mobile connections, to access attached devices stream etc. Say 3 kids in the car can watch 3 diff movies streaming from the usb drive attacjed to it
* SD Card, also can be seen by any device as above, good for photographers etc
* 1 touch button to copy all SD Card to any attached USB drive, so no laptop needed to move files from SD to free space
* Portable Power Bank, has it's own power but can charge phones etc too
* 2.4G + 5Ghz
* etc

Some hotels charge per Ethernet cable connection or more prevalent now for each wifi device connected per night, can easily be $24 per device per night.
With this you connect it to hotel wifi as a device, share it's own wifi, then can attach 5 phones laptops tablets etc to it and the hotel will only see only 1 wifi device connected.

Same can be done by plugging an Ethernet cable from hotel RJ45 port to the Ethernet jack on this. Again you only pay for 1 device as it transmits it's own wifi.
So can use it as a:

* Wifi Repeater
* Wifi Bridge
* Access Point

It is the best in it's class. Anyone buying, make sure it is the latest WD009 model (says so on back) as it is faster SD copying files than WD007 or previous WD003 version.

Another little gadget is tiny travel router. No battery so needs plugging into usb port on phone laptop etc.

Why would you need this? Because if you are in a free wifi hotspot, starbucks or airport or hotel lobby etc, your data is visible to many.
This company makes the best secure tiny travel routers.

You can use VPN and hack it too if techie to add scripts, adblock etc etc.
OpenVPN, OpenWRT, WireGuard, etc all erver or clients. If these mean nothing to you, nvm.
Best supported travel router by most top VPN companies: have zip files to download for this and all is done automatically in settinga by clicking on the your VPN company's zip file to auto config.

Again can attach a portable modem with a sim card etc.
Link to hotel ethernet or wifi as above, to share private wifi
Again your hotel only sees 1 wifi device while many devices can use it's wifi using hotel's internet BUT much safer
usb slot to attach device, eg SD Card reader etc to share with connected devices
Video stream
100s of plugins, update firmware to see the huge list, great for newbies or linux techies

Mango, little yellow one, is the most famous travel router:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=GL.iNET+GL-MT300N-V2&_sacat=0

i have the black box AR300M16, which is the same as Mango (Mediatech chipset) but with better Qualcomm chipset, better wifi range detection etc.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=GL.iNet+GL-AR300M16&_sacat=0

The higher priced AR300M is double the price, with or without external antenaas, and has slightly more RAM.

The best travel router is their SLATE, latest version -EXT:

Many don't leave home without one, be it the tiny one for Starbucks etc or the card deck size one for a mobile private LAN.

washere 8/26/2019 1:25 am
Also if recording on the phone with a mike, i have a few of these to use headphones to monitor too. As Bluetooth earpods use too much bandwidth and go off sync.

Bonne Chance.
