Has to be applauded for advocating outliners to the masses. The auspicious leitmotif in his list is that they're mostly not subscription/cloud based, so he has good taste/style/sense IMHO. I have used and tried most on his list but actually use none of those anymore. Hope he knows about this little forum, can't blame him though, most interesting creative & visual outlining/planning tools of recent years, many open source and free, are not discussed even here.

Oooh. Like what?

Opening threads here requires time, regular tending & checking, and that's putting it mildly. Also there are sub areas within outlining, never addressed here ontologically, so depends on which sub genre. I think you like tree based text data models better.

Also general interest here has shifted to sub based cloud ventures during last year, less appetite per ye olde days style offline apps. If I get time this weekend, might post a couple of threads.

I look forward to your thoughts. I think you're right that many of us are moving to cloud-based apps, just because that's where the net is going generally, and we have multiple platforms. Maybe we need another environmental scan or two.

Thanks. Me too. Off the top of my head I easily use over 40 online apps & services on 5 OSes which use my personal free clouds like Dropbox gdrive 1drive or own server sync. No subs. Various genres, sizes & uses too. Many open source with multi devs sure to popularity, so will survive unlike most cloud sub based ventures.

Saving many thousands of expensive lessons hours invested long term NVM other more precious benefits than mere money. Allowing work to develop in time, quantity, quality, depth and layers in familiar interface and data structure without it disappearing as many cloud apps do and will.

Secondly, most of my fave offline tools, most not open source, also have sync features or can be set up to do so. So no loss. No cloud app comes close to any of them in features, uses, potentials etc. Compared to them they are gimmicks and mere online clipboards.

Finally, outlining is not just about data input, but also fast data consumption with efficient pleasant UI/UX to take in live data in multi formats. In niche areas of one's interests within other protocols, other than browsers' http. This large area of software for fast data access with beautiful Outliner interfaces is almost never discussed here.

This is an excellent review. But I’m still looking for a Windows 10 replacement for my antiquated but still relevant and functioning LexisNexis Notemap.
Notemap is no longer supported by LexisNexis. I’m still working with Notemap (it functions properly with Windows 10) almost on a daily basis producing sermons and Bible studies.
