Well, managed to sort of fix it in Chrome by installing this CSS over it and running them together:

Still on a Chromebook here, too, and I don’t notice a change—although it has always had the problem of not being able to reposition the mouse by clicking. It still generally looks and works the same. What did it stop doing for you?

Looks like it might be a device-specific issue, as it’s only occurring on my aging Dell 7310, which is coming to its end of life in June.
After the latest Chrome OS system update the midnight and dark themes stopped working.
Never mind, the CSS was a good fix.
