Edit on iOS -- does one thing and does it right

I think it's been mentioned here before, but this app is worth highlighting: Edit, by K.Q. Dreger

https://audaciousfox.net/projects/edit

Edit (on iOS) does only one thing, and the developer promises it will never do anything else: it opens on a single sheet for typing plain text. The sheet contents can be sent with share extension from any app that accepts plain text input. And that's all. No navigation. No settings -- except a dark mode toggle. No begging for ratings. No pro version. Once and done.

I put it on my phone's home screen because many notes are just quick jots that need to be captured on the fly.

It's sort of refreshing to find something that decisively eschews bloat.

Thanks, Paul. Downloaded.

Reminiscent for me of a simple iOS reminders (lower-cap "r") app I recently installed, called Later (http://laterapp.co with deadline presets. Free for iOS. Syncs with a Later Mac app that lives in the menu-bar, but that costs $9.99.

Have you tried Drafts?

http://getdrafts.com/

It is a similar idea, just a text file - but it combines with powerful scripts to integrate with other apps. Write some text and send it to Bear, 2Do, Ulysses, email, do a google search, or add tags and archive it right in the app. After a specified time it always opens a new note on launch (although this can temporarily be turned off if you are referencing a single note).

Sure, all versions since v1.

But the point of Edit is it does only one thing. Which is all I need most of the time.

The Focus Mode in Drafts 5 duplicates Edit's static, neverending page - yet does approximately one million more things if wanted too, all out of the way. And Focus Mode is available in the free edition. So I don't see the point of using Edit since Drafts 5 Free does the same thing with much, much more under the hood.

Then don't use it? Really, it's about simple. Sometimes that's appealing.

Hey, I *don't* use it! :)

And I'm pointing out that a more capable app that's a superset is free! :) :)

Relative complexity has advantages in many circumstances - but in some circumstances, so also does simplicity.

If you use the free download version of Drafts 5 and turn on Focus Mode, it's as simple as it gets - a plain sheet with a keyboard that's got an enhanced bar with an action button for copying/mailing/iMessaging (and a Drafts button if you want to save or access saved files.

@satis is complete right, as usual. Drafts rules, of course.

Chris -- if you are following along, please delete this thread so more folks aren't mislead about Edit.

FYI Screencasts Online magazine's latest issue contains an hour of video instruction on the new Drafts 5, and you can sign up for a 10-day trial if you want to check it out:

https://screencastsonline.com/magazine/

Also David Sparks (macsparky.com, MacPowerUsers podcast) did several 1-5 minute introductory videos for Drafts 4, and recently supplemented them with another 3-4 quickie videos for the new version:

I hope I don't end up sounding like I'm shilling for the app - fact is, I don't think it's worth the $20/year upgrade subscription price, so I only (very happily) use the free variant myself! I still have Drafts 4 on my iOS devices in case I need something the free version of v.5 doesn't do, but so far I have not had occasion to go back to it....

(But if Agile Tortoise uses the new Apple UIKit framework that's currently being moved over from iOS to macOS to make a kickass Mac app next year, my opinion might change.)

Yes. Definitely wasn't a good idea to post a recommendation for something I like and use without first consulting those who know better. Now I know! Many thanks for setting me straight.
