"SimpleMind" is outliner and mind map combined in one. The combination has changed my thinking process: faster, smoother, more visual. Now "see" connections I never noticed before.
Features I like:
- n-Pane Outliner (“n” up to you)
- Colors to visualize categories
- Mind map for drag & drop, sequencing, and connections outside of sequence.
- Links to documents / web pages
Other features:
- Cross-platform: Mac, Windows, Android, iOS
- Steady updates since 8 years
- Users: 8,000,000 (8 million!)
I use SimpleMind for three functions:
(1) My thinking: Everything on my mind goes into one huge SimpleMind file.
-- plans, hunches, strategy, problems, personal goals, To Do list, shopping list (all in one place)
-- thousands of topics
-- I update every day, often every hour.
-- It is first file I open in the morning and the last I close at night.
(2) My personal history:
-- bank accounts, credit cards, insurance details, old addresses, passport, with links to scans
(3) Outlining & general writing: Right now I am outlining this post in SimpleMind. I wish I could
post that here as PDF so you could see the colors and functions in action. But no images here,
so, if you want a sample PDF, send email to me:
Marc_outline@pbjservices.swift-mail.com (Note the two dots in email address.)
Shortcomings:
- sorting: none (only manual w/drag & drop)
- columns: none
- calculations: none
- Navigation tools somewhat limited (so I wrote my own using Keyboard Maestro).
- Customer support: quick response, but mediocre thinking.
The developer:
- I'm not connected in any way. They don't know me and I don't know them. I paid retail price.
- Developer's web site is clean and neat but boring and sorely lacking juicy details for CRIMPers.
- Retail price: Euro 25 and up, depending on # users
-- free-trial
-- lifetime license

I've used SimpleMind for quite awhile and agree it is very nice. One feature you mentioned intrigued me because I have no idea what it means in the mind mapping context, and I can find no mention of it in the application. (A search of their FAQ also reveals nothing.)
So what do you mean by "n-Pane Outliner" specific to SimpleMind?
