All,
I just uploaded two videos that provide an in depth walkthrough of SheetPlanner 1.0.

https://www.facebook.com/sheetplanner/

Shortly after WWDC, I expect for us to send the beta out to those who signed up for it.

Thanks,
Peter

I do not use Facebook and never intend to. Can you post your video to YouTube or Vimeo?
Skywatcher 5/23/2018 7:24 am
Same... I won't use Facebook, but I'd love to see how SheetPlanner is shaping up. Youtube or Vimeo please.
NickG 5/23/2018 10:02 am
There's some really interesting stuff here - thank you. I'm reminded more and more of the late lamented Ecco Pro (which is a compliment!), and there are some other features that looking really useful

I think you'd be well advised to post the videos somewhere like Vimeo or Youtube as others have requested. I think you'll get some useful feedback.

I know you're flat out getting ready for beta, but if you could find a moment to post your thoughts on export options and on possibilities for IOS, it would be great.

NickG,
They will be up on YouTube shortly/ I will post the links when the uploads are complete.

Did you watch the second video?, I cover the export options in that video. They are CSV and OPML.

Are there other export options you would like to see? - let me know what you are thinking.

As far as iOS is concerned, we will decide how to proceed after WWDC.

We built this as a Mac app because my sense is that historically thats where people most use productivity apps especially something like Outlining where there is quite a bit of data entry. I also thought the kind of people who might find this useful would be veterans of outliners and PIM's of the past who were used to the desktop and mobile experience.

The last release of iOS has changed my perspective some. Its definitely turning into a device more suited to productivity.

My hope is that Marzipan happens and we can build off one code base with two different experiences. If that ends up being a 2019 thing we will probably wait till 2019 to do the iOS app and concentrate on adding features to the Mac version. We have a really robust roadmap and vision for SheetPlanner on the Mac which includes a lot of power user features and collaboration.

My hope would be to then create the iOS version using the marzipan framework (whatever that might be).

I welcome all your feedback. You are exactly the kind of people I had in mind for this app.

Thanks,
Peter

Yes, I got to video 2 after I posted - sorry.

I think the export and IOS issues are tied up together:

- Collecting information/taking notes on the go and having them sync easily to a desktop app for organisation and development
- Task management features probably need to be available on portable devices - if I don't have may Mac with me, I want to be reminded and/or annotate/check off tasks while I'm moving around. Some kind of sync with a task manager would do the job.

As I said earlier, I don't expect you to do anything with this for quite a while - I think you might be bust for a few months yet!

Nick,
I got it.

So separate from exporting and as far as iOS is concerned, SheetPlanner is a document based application like Numbers, Pages etc, rather than being a database driven application.

They documents are NSDocument based which means that we can take advantage of apple collaboration features in a future version just like you can with Numbers, Pages, Keynote.

In a future version, you will be able to share the document with others or open on another device and edit in another device (another Mac, or iPhone, iPad when the iOS app is completed)

Thats the plan, although as you know, plans are subject to change!!

Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Peter

one other thing. We may look at the ability to share a filtered list via caldav with reminders, that way you would have access to a SheetPlanner list via Reminders on your phone.

I like the "pinch to zoom" feature, and the Focus feature.
The filters are also good.

Good job; looks great application.

Peter,

From what I've seen, it looks very much like the kind of apps that would be useful to me, as I love Gantt charts. But one question immediately comes to mind : I've already been using ProjectWizard's Merlin ( which I find better than Omnigroup's Omniplan ) for a few years now and like it very much. and SheetPlanner seems very much a competitor to these. What would be your main selling argument for someone who would be looking into your app VS the other ones ? Is it going to be cheaper ? Or easier to use ? So far the main differentiation feature I see is the way calendar's are integrated within Sheetplanner ( both Merlin and Omniplan sync with Apple's Calendar, but don't have one within the app ).
Also, I think you should most definitely consider an iOS version. Users are going to be screaming for one once you release this on Mac.
SheetPlanner 5/23/2018 7:10 pm
Skywatcher,
I think that for many people something like Merlin or Omniplan are just way to much.

With SheetPlanner you can just jot your list down in a free form outline and add structure as you go. all you need to do is add start and finish dates and click the timeline button and you have a general sense of how tasks relate to one another over time.

Also, you may have an outline that contains both project and non project related items, maybe some research on kitchens and then another part of the outline that deals with the timeline to remodel it.

I think it will definitely be easier to use than any Project Management app they try.

The long term roadmap for the app is very extensive and will allow for the management of information types that are not project management specific.

Truth is, I have entered into this entirely on a hunch. My gut has always told me that there was an opportunity here for something document based, not rigid like GTD or not complex like a Project Management tool.

Lets hope I am right!
Thanks for the feedback.

Skywatcher,
One other comment.
If a user is happily using Merlin or OmniPlan then I would see little reason for them to buy SheetPlanner for Project Management. If they are comfortable with those tools and need the functionality, then SheetPlanner would be a downgrade.
Thanks,
Peter

I agree. In fact, I'm myself underusing Merlin, as I have no need for the Resources and the Costs features. I really bought it for visual planning of projects with Gantt . I think there is a market indeed for simpler and cheaper ( both Merlin and Omniplan are over 200€ ) Project Management software.
Ironically, just after posting, I went to ProjectWizard's page to discover , much to my horror, that they might be switching to a subscription plan... That's a no-no for me.
Paul Korm 5/23/2018 8:43 pm
Peter -- thank you for posting the videos to YouTube. I only had a chance to skim through them -- a bit tl;dr for a workday -- but what I see I like very much.

I'm also a user of Merlin (and sometimes OmniPlan).

For me, Merlin is a formal project management tool - it can hold a lot of detail that enables me to manage dependencies, time, resources, costs and report on them. It allows me to model the impact of resource or time changes, see where the critical path is and plan around risks. In other words, it's much more than a Gantt chart generator.

Sheetplanner looks like more of a generalised information and task management tool, and I think it fulfil a very different role from Merlin. As an example, I'll use Merlin to manage and track my project(s), but I'd use Sheetplanner to manage/track my own tasks and the information related to them. I'm not going to put. mix of work and personal tasks into Merlin, but I might into SP.
