I don’t remember the details, but the subscription may have only been required for those who wish to sync between their iPhone and the desktop? It is possible that desktop-only users don’t need to pay. I no longer use either so I don’t recall the details.

Yes, I’ve become somewhat disillusioned with the mostly excellent Outlinely as Glam Development cease talking to anyone and fail to release any updates at all. They did exactly the same thing with their very promising task manager for iOS; started off well, did a few months of great updates, then gradually declined and ended with a bug-ridden version that didn’t work properly. Ignominious.
I’ve cancelled my auto-renewing subscription, pending further info. A shame, because they do some genuinely excellent stuff. Outlinely could be THE outlining product for macOS and iOS - it’s already vastly superior to OmniOutliner. Instead, it’s still got some irritating bugs (e.g. folders in the navigation bar are randomly ordered, tagging needs rethinking and updating) and no signs that the subscription model is going to result in ongoing improvements.
Ah well. I’m still hoping Bear will incorporate hierarchical outlines and folding in the not-too-distant future. At least they respond to e-mails to say they’re thinking about it!

Interesting. Mentions of subscriptions are absent on the site, but I ran across a ProductHunt thread where it’s mentioned (alongside complaints that Workflowy seemed abandoned, lol).
It seems like there’s a spurt of increased dev activity for Workflowy and Dynalist, and Checkvist keeps chugging along the whole time as well. I’ve played with Outlinely on iOS and liked it, though I’m importing/exporting to/from OmniOutliner for the time being on that platform.
I create my outlines almost always on the Mac and never tried Outlinely on it, but I’d heard good things from people who had. I bought and am playing with TaskPaper, which I like a lot, but I don’t know about its future given the apparent intention by the dev to focus on FoldingText.

I think that the intentions of the developer do change. I recall that a year or two ago he did focus on Folding Text. But then the release of Taskpaper 3 marked a return of focus to that application. At least that’s what I remember.

While Dynalist premium is very pricy without the discount, the free version is quite generous and usable. What’s more, they post regular updates, have a clear plan and philosophy about the future development of the app, and are very responsive to user feedback even though they have a small team and a lot of users. I really feel I am getting something for my subscription, unlike most other apps I use that charge one.
