Pierre, ad appears when I use Chrome on my Android phone. I will try it with Firefox.

Strange, no ad seen here (other than the usual one on the left and at
the bottom of the window).
Daly, perhaps try a different browser, I suspect a browser "add-on",
perhaps silently installed when you installed a software

Since we have a wide array of people using a wide array of software
here, I wanted to ask if you use any of software in unorthodox/clever
ways (or have cute examples of others doing so)? Unique use cases,
exploitations of rarely used features etc etc

Using a browser to send SMS text messages, and also receive them. Good for events, parties, occasions etc. Or last minute blitzkrieg PR campaigns and other urgent announcements.

May I ask how you do that?

You may Franz. There are various ways. One is the old way, websites that offer the service. I stopped using them several years ago in the whole except occasional use.

The second is software. I never used or looked into them.

The third strategy is to use browser extensions like Chrome MightyText or similar.

But I always advise friends to take a couple of easy precautions before using any of the above methods.

I suspect there are cheaper answers, but I use a service called "pulse" for this. https://messenger.klinkerapps.com/
It provides SMS on my phone account on all my devices (Windows, android tablet, android phone). It really is great to receive and respond to texts on my desktop using a real keyboard. I don't do bitzkrieg PR but I know it's useful for that as well. I just like that I don't have to type on that tiny keyboard.

AND on the original topic of the thread: you guys inspired me and I started using SMS to track time. It's working great. I have 2 SMS accounts (my regular phone account and my google voice account). I text myself a quick note when tracking something that is time-based, and voila, when I look at that conversation in Pulse or in Google Voice, I have a complete time-stamped log.

Yes that's a good idea, never thought of it. Like I said here as in emailing self a reminder and not opening it before time. One gets really itchy to just open it.

The other advantage of using a browser or whatever desktop software for lots of SMS in one go, apart from keyboard, is easy monitoring of lots of in/out traffic. Not easy for too many in a short time in a phone, as in events etc.

The precautions I take is to use a free or dollar SIM for the purpose, or a secondary voice account. Like we have secondary emails for registering, etc that might spam us. Although the top few websites & extensions are fairly good at not doing so or selling numbers on, I just don't risk it. I have a few spare free or dirt cheap SIMs always anyway.

The other precaution is to let people know it's a temporary SIM. So don't have to check it for replies in future.
