Companion PIMs for Windows (desktop) and Windows Mobile?

I’ve got a T-Mobile Wing, runs Windows Mobile Professional 6.
I want the ability to access and modify the same PIM data (Tasks, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, Voice Memos) from both my Wing and my desktop PC.
MS Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista) syncs the Windows Mobile PIM data with Outlook. I really don’t want to have to buy Outlook! Besides, Tasks and Notes run slowly on my Wing. To my amazement, my old Palm is snappier with the same Notes and Tasks.
I’ve looked at Google. I don’t have a data plan on my device, but I can access the web via Wifi. I’d really like the ability to access my data when I’m not connected, and Google Gears would appear to provide that. But oddly enough, Google does not provide a Tasks application.
Any ideas for a combination of desktop PIM and WM PIM to work with the same data? I see that Essential PIM advertises the ability to sync with Windows Mobile. So does Evernote, but I don’t know if Evernote has calendar and tasks functions.
Thanks for any ideas.

Hmm, here’s an idea. Sync Windows Mobile with Mozilla Thunderbird/Lightning/Sunbird.
Others?
